Action

Our Approach The Salem Don Bosco Anbu Illam Social Service Society (DBAI) implements a comprehensive approach to achieve its mission of empowering children, youth, and women, as well as fostering community development. The key components of our approach include: Collective Action: Mobilising and organising the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children, youth and community-specifically women into child and people’s collectives and facilitating collective actions. Emphasising education: Education is a potential tool to liberate children from all clutches of bondage, modern servitude with cognitive development and creative learning, and means to realise the right to life with dignity and protection. Holistic growth of young people: Working to create immediate and lasting perceptible changes in the living conditions of deprived and deplorable children and working conditions of adolescents and young Short term and long term interventions: Focusing on catalytic and facilitating communities to empower children and youth in the areas of education, health, livelihood, social engineering, and environment. Participatory Approach: Enabling and facilitating people to take part in governance at the local and state levels through networking with NGOs and CBOs for ensuring sustainable development and growth. Holistic Intervention: Interventions are multifaceted focusing on Rescue, Restore, Recover and Reformation. Advocacy approach: DBAI focuses on an approach to scale up the ground level deplorable situation and complex issues of children to the Government authority and bodies to collaboratively work with them to create a positive and enabling environment in which realisation of all child rights and restoration of childhood is possible contour of social discourse. Research based approach: Collate evidence based critical information and status of children and youth, Don Bosco would engage with action research and minor case studies to closely work with the government and other business and industrial entities to solicit their support and solidarity. Child friendly approach: Access to adequate, socially as well as culturally relevant food is important for healthy childhood, since lacking nutritious food has severe consequences for the children’s future both physical and mental wellbeing and ensuring and improving their nutritional safety is focused.

Impact

DBAI has made considerable progress in its mission to empower children, youth, migrants and women, as well as promote community development. Some of our notable achievements and initiatives include: 1. Children rescued 53,698+: DBAI has been successful in rescuing numerous children from hazardous situations, such as child labour, trafficking, and other forms of exploitation. These efforts have helped protect vulnerable children and provide them with a safe environment to grow and thrive. 2. Children integrated into family 52,298+: Our organization works tirelessly to reunite rescued children with their families, whenever possible. We believe in the importance of family support and nurturing relationships for the holistic development of children. 3. Institutional care given 3500+: In cases where family reunification is not possible, DBAI provides institutional care to ensure the well-being and safety of the children. Our facilities offer a supportive environment that promotes their emotional, physical, and intellectual development. 4. Women empowered 11,458+: Through vocational training, entrepreneurship opportunities, and access to healthcare and education, we have enabled women to improve their lives and those of their families. 5. Households accessing welfare schemes 14,248+: We assist families in accessing government welfare schemes and other available resources, ensuring they receive the support they need to overcome poverty and improve their quality of life. 6. Training programs 1,35,640: DBAI offers various training programs to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in today's world. These programs include vocational training, life skills development, and education in various fields. 7. Awareness programs: Our organization conducts awareness programs to educate communities on important issues such as child rights, gender equality, environmental conservation, and health. By raising awareness, we empower communities to take action and bring about positive change. 8. Dropout children educated 2480+: DBAI has been successful in providing education and support to children who have dropped out of school. By offering tailored educational programs and addressing the underlying reasons for dropout, we help these children to reintegrate into the education system and achieve their potential. 9. Number of trees planted 3,109+: Recognizing the importance of environmental conservation, our organisation has undertaken tree planting initiatives. These efforts not only contribute to a greener environment but also raise awareness about the importance of environmental stewardship within the communities we serve. Programs

  • Children Parliament

    The Children's Parliament operates much like the national parliament, providing a forum for children to actively participate in addressing social concerns within their communities. In this Parliament, members pinpoint diverse social issues in their locality and collaborate on ideas to overcome these challenges.

  • Drop-out Centre

    DBAI has set up 3 dropout centres to offer these children the chance to resume their education, ultimately aiding in the prevention of early child marriages, early pregnancies, and child labour.

  • Vocational Training

    DBAI is committed to offering vocational training for youth, we aim to improve their skills and facilitate access to employment prospects. We believe that by imparting job-focused skills, we can empower young individuals and assist them in achieving a brighter future.

  • Community Based Organizations

    To promote community empowerment and catalase positive transformation at the grassroots level, we create community-based organizations (CBOs) that concentrate on increasing awareness and encouraging cooperative efforts within local communities.

  • Women Self Help Groups

    Women are pivotal in driving community transformation and empowerment. By actively participating in Federations and local community groups, they are progressively taking control of their economic security and making significant contributions to the welfare of their families and communities.

  • Migrant Support Groups

    DBAI helps migrant workers to access government welfare schemes and offers mental wellbeing counselling and general health care support.

  • Shelter Homes

    District

    Shelter is a vital requirement for runaway, street, orphan, semi-orphan, HIV infected and homeless children, who are often found in bus and railway stations. These shelters also serve the needs of orphaned children and others in need of shelter.

  • Child Right Protection Centre

    District

    The Child Right Protection Centre is working for the rehabilitation of the runaway and trafficked children in and around Salem. We have three street contact centers in the new bus stand, Kichipalayam and another is in Chinnamapalayam and efforts have taken to establish another street contact Centre in the old bus stand. Through these street contact centers nearly 9850 children have been rescued and rehabilitated.

  • Youth Groups

    DBAI forms separate adolescent groups for boys and girls in the communities they serve, offering a supportive and enriching atmosphere for youth to acquire vital life skills, receive career guidance and realise their full potential

  • Caring Community Groups

    Transformation of the society is not possible by single handed effort. We need a movement of people to support and carry forward the transformation. In a same way to establish a child friendly society we need people who can extend their support to protect the basic rights of children. Thus, with this motive in mind Caring Community Groups are formed to support the works of Anbu Illam. The members of caring community groups’ are identified from various groups like Auto Drivers, Scavengers, Transport Staff, Porters, Vendors, Shop Owners, Corporation Staff, Police, and Railway Police Force (RPF), etc, to promote and to protect child rights and to support in the process of rehabilitation of street and working children. Each caring community group consist of 10 to 15 members and they meet on a monthly basis to discuss the issues that are really concern about the children and their welfare.

  • Don Bosco Vazhikaatti - a Centre for career guidance, training and job placement

    Vocational Guidance is an important and very urgent need of Youth today. Many of the youngsters are very well educated and well qualified, but they find difficult to find the right job. In order to realize the felt need of the context, a centre for career guidance, training and job placement was established under the umbrella of ‘Don Bosco Vazhikaatti’ to create an awareness among the urban & rural youth about the available job opportunities in the government and private sectors, through self-employment schemes and career oriented services.

  • Volunteers Internship

    An institution achieves its greatness not in carrying out the activities by itself, but by the mere fact that the activities are run without them, that is through the volunteers. Don Bosco Anbu Illam has been adhering to so many people through various activities in and around Salem. Irrespective of the limited number of staff the activities are still carried out efficiently through the help of many volunteers that it has promoted. In most of the places it is the volunteers who do the works of Anbu Illam. The organization has moved to a greater height through people who volunteer themselves to take up what Anbu Illam has envisaged and foreseen
