Since
1949
Family Planning Association of India (FPA India), established in 1949, played a crucial role in introducing family planning as part of India's first F Read moreive Year Plan in 1952, making India a pioneer in this area. Its mission was born out of concern for the health of women, as high fertility rates, limited public health resources, and low life expectancy were pressing issues at the time. Today, FPA India is a prominent civil society organization operating across 18 states and union territories in India, especially in regions marked by poor developmental indicators and significant gender disparities. These areas include Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and the Union Territory of Delhi. FPA India collaborates with businesses, corporations, and international donors to provide essential health services, disseminate vital information, enhance community capabilities, and advocate for initiatives that promote community development and well-being.

Programs
-
Advocacy Programme
The organisation prioritizes advocacy for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) within the national development agenda. Through strategic initiatives, it engages with various stakeholders to influence policy formulation, implementation, and improvement. These efforts aim to ensure universal access to SRHR information and services, combat stigma and discrimination, and address sexual and gender-based violence. Key priorities include garnering support from the public and private sectors, sensitizing the media to promote SRHR, mobilizing communities, and cultivating champions from diverse sectors, including youth. Furthermore, the organisation actively participates in discussions related to national demographics, health programmes, and development initiatives, seeking opportunities for partnership building and improving SRHR outcomes.
-
Gender & Rights Programme
FPA India actively challenges entrenched biases and practices in India, aiming to empower women, girls, and vulnerable groups. It combats gender-based violence through staff training and community awareness. Additionally, it offers livelihood training, promotes self-sufficiency, and collaborates with Government schemes and NGOs. Working with key populations and nurturing self-help groups in marginalized communities is a priority. Several projects, including Shadows and Light, Chennai Metro Rail, and JTF, focus on sexual and reproductive health, HIV needs, and gender equality, reflecting its holistic approach to empowerment and rights promotion.
-
Programme for Youth
The organisation recognizes the unique challenges faced by India's youthful population, including health issues such as nutritional disorders, substance use, risky sexual behaviours, and mental health concerns. To address these challenges, it provides young people with information, counselling, and youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Its focus includes offering Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) to individuals aged 10-24, both in formal educational settings and among vulnerable populations in rural and urban areas. It engages school authorities, teachers, community leaders, and parents to ensure the successful implementation of the CSE programme. Additionally, it leverages digital media and web-based platforms to facilitate online CSE. This comprehensive approach aims to empower young people with scientifically accurate knowledge and life skills to make informed decisions about their sexuality and lifestyle, fostering healthy development.
-
Reproductive & Sexual Healthcare Services
The organization provides comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare, including safe abortion and HIV/AIDS services. Its services have expanded to encompass STI/RTI/HIV management, cancer detection, gender-based violence screening, and age-specific SRH services. Delivery points include static clinics, outreach teams, and community providers, with a focus on marginalized communities. Quality of care follows IPPF frameworks. It undertakes projects like improving SRH services in West Bengal and providing humanitarian support in Odisha after Cyclone Fani, emphasizing accessibility and quality in its initiatives.
-
Social Enterprise Programme
The organisation, seeking to address sanitation and menstrual hygiene challenges in India, initiated a social enterprise project in Bhiwandi, Thane, Maharashtra. With a focus on producing high-quality disposable sanitary napkins for low-income consumers, this venture aims to improve women's health, provide livelihood opportunities for local women, and generate sustainable income. Supported by the Social Enterprise Acceleration Programme (SEAP), the project is dedicated to standardizing product quality, branding, and pricing through continuous improvement and consumer feedback. Furthermore, staff members underwent training to enhance their expertise in social enterprise development, benefiting the sanitary napkin production initiative and aligning with the organisation's vision and mission.
