Gram Swaraj Sangha, known as Gandhi Vichar Parisad (GVP), is a voluntary organisation dedicated to promoting Gandhian ideology for the past two decade Read mores. It aims to spread this ideology across all sections of society, particularly among the poor, marginalized, and women in villages. GVP operates under the motto of empowering villagers through direct democracy and non-violent means, harnessing their strengths and resources for social transformation. GVP follows five guiding principles: ensuring all adults in the village are members of the Lok Samity, making decisions through consensus, prioritizing the needs of the most vulnerable through 'Antodaya', resolving disputes internally, and collaborating to achieve family ideals within the societal context. By combining traditional Indian culture with modern expertise, GVP seeks to address rural challenges using simple yet effective methods, emphasizing community involvement and self-help with unwavering support.

Programs

  • Women Empowerment Programme

The organisation operates a training and production centre for Handicrafts, specifically focusing on cotton and leather hand gloves, aiming to empower women. Currently, 15 participants are undergoing training in glove-making, with the products utilized in various safety departments of Iron and Steel factories. Additionally, 65 members of self-help groups (SHGs) receive economic support for businesses such as fish selling, goat rearing, and vegetable selling. These initiatives have led to notable outcomes: women achieving economic self-sufficiency, improving their lifestyle and standard of living, reducing health hazards, freeing themselves from money lenders, increasing banking linkages, enhancing infant care, solidifying their role within the family, boosting solidarity and group confidence among women, and reducing malnutrition through improved access to nutritious food.

The organisation conducts village-level meetings and seminars in Bankura and Purulia districts to empower villagers and cluster leaders, raising awareness on resisting social injustices and fostering societal peace. These activities have yielded significant outcomes: Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) achieving self-sufficiency, villagers actively resisting social evils, enhanced planning, monitoring, and evaluation skills, adoption of eco-friendly agriculture leading to improved agricultural practices and reduced losses, increased food security, and elevated lifestyle standards. Moreover, the initiatives have fostered solidarity among community members, promoting self-reliance and communal harmony.
