Sreema Mahila Samity (SMS), established in West Bengal in 1972, is committed to empowering women and challenging societal norms. Operating in over two Read more thousand villages across districts like Nadia, North 24 Parganas, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Malda, SMS implements diverse interventions in income generation, health, education, and support for distressed individuals. The organisation focuses on fostering community solidarity, skill development, poverty alleviation, and the empowerment of women, children, and marginalized groups. It advocates for a stigma-free and safe environment, amplifying women's voices. SMS receives support from various national and international entities, including Children International (USA), Sahay (Kolkata), Caritas, State Bank of India, United Bank of India, NABARD, Bharatiya Mahila Bank, Irmgard Kranzmaier – Mission (Germany), Mr. Will Haris (USA), Mr. Sanjay Paul and Shipra Paul (Kolkata), Kabita Mitra, among others.

  • WASH Programme

    District

    SMS initiated its journey in underprivileged areas, educating children in government-aided schools about cleanliness, water, and hygiene. It also provides life-skill training for adolescents, encourages better hygienic practices in schools, and supports women in tackling social issues. It also aims to develop healthy habits among children and adolescent girls while addressing social problems like child marriage and eve-teasing.

  • Family Counseling and Legal Aid Programme

    District

    Sreema Mahila Samity established the Legal Guidance & Family Counseling Center to assist women and families experiencing strained relations and marital discord, providing a platform for conflict resolution. Survivors of domestic violence or those facing oppression can register their issues at the centre. Staff independently investigates these cases, validates their authenticity, and encourages both parties to discuss problems for a resolution. Counselling is offered to settle disputes amicably; however, if unresolved, guidance is provided for legal or police intervention. SMS offers legal information to those lacking access to such resources and aims to empower women's mental resilience. A total of 473 cases have been registered through this initiative this year.

  • Sreema Learning Centre Programme

    District

    Sreema operates seven free coaching centres for underprivileged students in Nadia, benefitting a total of 450 children from classes I to IV. The centres are facilitated by 20 teaching associates who utilize diverse teaching and learning materials, focusing primarily on the Government primary school syllabus, children's health and hygiene, as well as fostering cultural activities and sports. In addition, each teaching associate conducts home visits to discuss the students' progress and challenges with their parents.

  • Sabuj Pally - A Green Village Programme

    District

    The organisation established Sabuj Pally, a green village filled with diverse trees collected from various places. It serves as a serene space for children's play, bird nesting, and features vermipits and a pond. Students visit for project preparation and excursions, especially during the spring when the village blooms with various flowers. Now, there's a proposal to further develop Sabuj Pally as an organic village. SMS intends to extend this idea of a green village to others, promoting the concept beyond its borders.

  • Childline Services

    District

    Sreema Mahila Samity (SMS) collaborates with the Government of India and the Childline India Foundation to safeguard children's interests by utilizing telecommunication technology, ensuring its availability for children in need of care. It works closely with various allied systems such as DSWO, DCPS, Police, CWC, and the Health Care Juvenile Justice Board. The initiative operates the toll-free helpline number 1098, known as CHILDLINE, serving as a 24/7, 365-day emergency phone service dedicated to aiding and assisting children in distress across India. Beyond immediate responses, the service connects children with essential long-term care and rehabilitation services, having reached and assisted three million children nationwide. Additionally, SMS conducts various awareness programmes and campaigns such as the Anti-Child Labour Day Celebration, training sessions for volunteers, police, and other stakeholders, Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, CHILDLINE se Dosti, and National Girl Child Day.

  • ASHA Programme

    District

    Sreema Mahila Samity (SMS), in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Government of West Bengal, is conducting a training program to reduce the Mother Mortality Rate and Child Mortality Rate while encouraging institutional deliveries. The initiative targets rural and urban communities, particularly mothers and children within the healthcare service. The project’s key objectives include identifying and registering new pregnancies, births, and deaths, mobilizing and counselling communities to advocate for health services, managing cases of illness, and facilitating health service delivery through home visits, first-aid, and immunization sessions. Additionally, the project involves maintaining crucial health data and actively participating in community-level health planning.
