NEEDS started its intervention in selected poverty-stricken pockets of Bihar and Jharkhand and brought about a significant change in the life of women Read more, children and the community through food security, livelihood interventions, reproductive health and hygiene, and child protection outcome beside constitution and strengthening various institutional arrangements for sustainability. NEEDS focused on institutional arrangements in self-help collectives and their skill-building while creating a shared vision for change. A holistic approach towards development that includes improved accessibility of health services by women and children, in particular, child protection and rights that includes girl’s child education and early child marriage issues, financial inclusion are few of the core components ensured to the community.

Livelihood and food security
In a collective effort, households living in ultra-poverty are identified and supported. The community is mobilized, and self-help collectives are promoted to enhance capacities. Market-led livelihood skills are emphasized, ensuring increased production and productivity with end-to-end solutions. Additionally, efforts are made to promote land and water resource management facilities. Credit and technical linkages are established, and facilitation is provided to access government resources through convergence. This comprehensive approach aims to uplift and empower vulnerable communities.

Child protection and education
The program focuses on generating awareness, building capacity and skills, and establishing linkages for various health initiatives. Advocacy and lobbying efforts are informed by evidence-based data such as facility assessments and social audits. The MenEngage approach aims to promote gender equality and male participation in family planning choices while educating couples on available options. Micro-planning and involvement of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in community-based management help enhance services. There is a focus on improving the quality of services in Government Health Facilities like VHND, HSC, and CHC services. Additionally, mHealth applications are utilized to improve maternal and newborn health care, as well as to address adolescent health, sex education, and life skill education. The program also involves conducting maternal & neonatal death reviews to identify and address critical issues in maternal and neonatal care.

Hygiene and sanitation
The initiative focuses on promoting hygiene behavior and creating open defecation-free communities. It supports mass training and toilet construction efforts, ensuring access to safe drinking water, and implementing menstrual health management programs. Additionally, the initiative addresses school sanitation and solid waste management to improve overall community health and well-being.

Women entrepreneur collective
This programme targets the Mohli/Mahli tribal community, who are traditional bamboo artisans in Deoghar district, Jharkhand, India. The program aims to enhance the livelihoods of over 1000 families by revitalizing their Bamboo Craft Enterprises. This will be achieved through improved access to design, technology, finance, and markets.
