Dr. Murthy was a visionary who dedicated his life towards providing quality eye care, at a time when it was not freely available in Karnataka. Diagnostic and treatment services in 5 rural areas around Bangalore was started with the help of other NGOs and were run for over a decade providing quality and affordable eye care. In 1998, Karnataka Government granted land & supported by over 3500 donors, the trust built a state-of-the-art tertiary eye care ophthalmic hospital called Vittala International Institute of Ophthalmology (VIIO). Today the Hospital is equipped with latest advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment and undertakes research, training in all areas of ophthalmology. Innovative and successful models like the Nayana, Retinopathy of Prematurity telescreening, Visual rehabilitation Projects developed in this institute, have been adopted by Government and International agencies. We at VIIO strive to achieve our motto “Shraddahi Paramagathihi" through our dedicated team, with a driving spirit to ensure that "No one shall go blind for want of money or lack of care".
