It promotes environmentally compatible and locally acceptable development models that comprise natural resources management, especially conservation of soil, water and biodiversity of the environmentally stressed areas through advocacy, capacity building, transfer of knowledge and hand holding support to bring about desired changes in the community.

NCHSE implements programmes and projects related to watershed development in partnership with government, public and private sector agencies, including empowerment of community organizations, self-help group formation, skill development, and linking SHGs to credit.

NCHSE has implemented holistically designed watershed development projects that have transformed water regimes of villages suffering from acute water shortage, increasing surface water availability, improving groundwater levels, and enhancing crop production.

Watershed implementation
The centre began its involvement in watershed activities in 1994 with minor projects. This was followed by larger projects under the Rajiv Gandhi Watershed Mission in the districts of Vidisha, Sehore, Hoshangabad, Ujjain, Jhabua, and Dhar. Other significant sponsors of these watershed activities included CASA, CAPART, and WFP.
The introduction of MGNREGA in 2005 provided the organization with an opportunity to collaborate with the state government on several projects in the Mandsaur and Sehore districts under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). In this partnership, ITC Limited, in collaboration with the Rajiv Gandhi Watershed Mission, assigned the implementation of watershed projects under IWMP in the Mallahargarh block of Mandsaur district and the Sehore block of Sehore district.
Milestones & Track Record
NCHSE has carried out approximately 150 monitoring and evaluation studies of developmental projects related to poverty alleviation, housing, rural roads, water supply, sanitation, and other sectors.
