It operates through multiple projects with focus on maternal and child health, reproductive health, emerging diseases and epidemics, health technologies, vaccines and immunization. The vaccine & immunization program is aimed at development of new vaccines against malaria, meningitis, pneumococcal disease and rotavirus in collaboration with vaccine development, formulation and manufacturing partners. It works in partnership with the Government of India for improving access to immunization services and through its efforts, has ensured vaccination of 78 million children against Japanese encephalitis along with introduction of Hepatitis B vaccine in the routine immunization program. Through its mother & child healthcare program, it is working on educating families on child care and collecting information on methods to prevent postpartum hemorrhage and cervical cancer which are among the leading causes of mortality among women in India. After extensive testing, it has developed a device for treatment and storage of water in households and it is presently working to make the device affordable for rural households. To deal with the problem of micro-nutrient deficiency in the rural population, it has developed Ultra Rice, a blend of rice flour, milled rice, vitamins and minerals and is now working to serve the fortified grain to more than 1,80,000 school children. It is also working with the Government for prevention and control of Tuberculosis (TB) through improvement and strengthening of communication, diagnostic laboratories, infection control and surveillance of multi drug-resistant TB.
