One Home One Toilet (OHOT) Program
Shelter Associates (SA) has been implementing the One Home One Toilet (OHOT) program to address open defecation issues in slums like Pimpri Chinchwad and Kolhapur. The program aimed to reduce the strain on community toilets, eliminate open defecation, and enhance health and hygiene in these communities.
A retrospective impact evaluation, conducted by 4th Wheel Social Impact and funded by the HT Parekh Foundation, focused on the OHOT program. In the past, Community Toilet Blocks (CTBs) were challenging to access for children, elders, pregnant women, and individuals with injuries or disabilities due to water overflow, making pathways slippery. After the construction of household toilets, 88% of respondents reported improved access and convenience.
Privacy was another concern, as CTB toilets lacked doors or latches. Women expressed safety concerns, often requiring company when visiting CTBs after sunset. With the installation of household toilets, respondents noted improvements in privacy
