The goal of the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is to help save lives of people with HIV/AIDS in the developing world by scaling up anti Read moreretroviral treatment. CHAI India has extended its reach beyond tackling just HIV to supporting the Indian government to address other health issues such as TB, malaria, hepatitis, nutrition, immunization, diarrhea and pneumonia. CHAI has partnered with the Government of India to scale up the zinc and oral rehydration salt treatment for children with diarrhea in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, helping 24.6 million children in over 125,000 villages. Under the guidance of the government of Madhya Pradesh, it is also working towards addressing the issue of malnutrition among children and anemia in adolescent girls and women throughout the state. In addition, CHAI is working towards a tuberculosis-free India. It has helped form the Initiative for Promoting Affordable and Quality TB Tests (IPAQT) in India, a group of private labs, which succeeded in negotiating a 50% reduction in the cost of GeneXpert tests to the consumer. CHAI's Effort for Elimination of Tuberculosis (JEET) is a project that is supported through the Global Fund, which aims to more closely connect private hospitals, clinics, and labs with public health programs in order to facilitate better reporting of TB cases, access to affordable TB diagnostics in the private sector, as well as to help patients stay on treatment until it is completed. In general, CHAI works with national governments to provide quality prevention and treatment services to all those who need them, and to create the fiscal space to achieve these goals. It aims to reduce HIV-related mortality by accelerating the scale-up of effective interventions including dedicated HIV care, voluntary medical male circumcision, and the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (eMTCT) programming, and by working with governments to ensure national HIV/AIDS programs are sustainably funded well into the future. CHAI's work in HIV-related cases is largely focused on pediatric HIV treatment. It works to increase the number of HIV-positive infants and children accessing testing, care, and treatment, while aiming to eliminate pediatric HIV in the long term. In order to accomplish said task, it helps the government introduce sustainable and systematic changes to prevent the birth of new infections and to make sure that any children who are infected are identified and treated. CHAI supports ministries of health to develop and introduce child-friendly HIV policies and guidelines, train and mentor health workers in pediatric care and treatment, strengthen related drug quantification and distribution systems, improve retention along the eMTCT/pediatric HIV continuum, and coordinate partner activities and funding.The ultimate goal of this work is to help governments move toward achieving an AIDS-free generation.
