India has earned the label of being the 'Head Injury Capital of the World,' witnessing over 150,000 fatalities annually due to head injuries. Shocking Read morely, 95% of trauma victims do not receive optimal care within the critical 'Golden Hour' following an injury, resulting in the loss of more than half of these lives. Regrettably, India's medical infrastructure is ill-equipped, lacking trained personnel and affordable treatment and rehabilitation options for cases of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). A somber day in February 2005 cast a shadow over the royal family of Jodhpur. During a polo match, Shivraj Singh, the son of HH Maharaja Gaj Singh and an ardent polo player, suffered a serious head injury after falling from his horse. This left him in a coma for several months and confined to a wheelchair for years. It was an emotionally taxing period for Shivraj and his family. However, Shivraj's unwavering determination, coupled with the unconditional support and care of his family, transformed this seemingly bleak situation into one filled with hope. Crucially, Shivraj had a unique advantage: his family could afford timely brain trauma care, exceptional rehabilitation facilities, and the expertise of devoted and skilled therapists. This well-coordinated approach to diagnosis, professional care, and rehabilitation became instrumental in his lengthy and challenging journey toward an extraordinary recovery. The Maharaja personally encountered these challenges. Recognizing the enormity of the issue of head injuries in India, he observed that only a handful of private hospitals provide high-quality yet expensive trauma care, remaining beyond the reach of most ordinary citizens. To address this daunting disparity in access to TBI treatment and care, Maharaja Gaj Singh established the Indian Head Injury Foundation (IHIF) in February 2007. His vision is to offer immediate, optimal assistance to Indians, particularly those without extensive resources, right after sustaining injuries, facilitating neuro-critical care, and eventually providing neuro-rehabilitation. Additionally, IHIF aims to empower the families of these victims and raise awareness regarding the prevention and management of TBI. At IHIF, the core mission revolves around nurturing a comprehensive brain trauma care system in India. The focus extends to conducting awareness programs addressing the prevalence of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Given India's unfortunate status as the country with the highest rate of head injuries globally, we shoulder the responsibility of spreading awareness about safety measures, particularly on roads. Concurrently, the organisation is dedicated to fortifying pre-hospital care by offering first-aid training and establishing IHIF rehabilitation centres. Presently, it has operational centres in Delhi and Jodhpur. Through its experience and endeavours, IHIF has come to realize that preventive measures and prompt pre-hospital care within the critical 'golden hour' post-head injury significantly reduce fatalities. The emphasis lies not only in treatment and rehabilitation but also in preventive measures and effective enforcement of laws. Persistent efforts have yielded promising outcomes, notably in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, who have pledged a new Road Transport and Safety Bill.

Programs

  • Music therapy at IHIF rehab centre, Delhi

Continuing research reveals the manifold ways in which music activates different brain centres. Its therapeutic nature, calming effect on nerves, and capacity to bring enjoyment are recognized, particularly for individuals facing challenges or disabilities.
Studies have illuminated how music can engage dormant brain centres following accidents or strokes. It sheds light on the myriad benefits music offers to the human mind and body, especially in the realm of neuro-rehabilitation through diverse neural pathways. To harness this therapeutic potential, IHIF has partnered with "The Music Therapy Trust" to provide regular sessions to patients and individuals affected by Brain Trauma at the IHIF Rehab Centre situated in the Delhi Commonwealth Women’s Association (DCWA) Campus. Currently, patients participate in Music Therapy sessions twice a week.

  • Donation of assistive gears and wheelchairs

With backing from several philanthropic organizations such as HT Parekh Foundation, OneKindAct, John Bissell Foundation, Citi Group, among others, IHIF has been actively providing wheelchairs and various assistive devices like crutches and callipers to survivors of traumatic injuries from marginalized segments of society. The PTC course stands out as an innovative program focusing on CPR and First Aid training, equipping participants with essential skills for providing immediate care to the injured in emergency situations, particularly when access to proper medical services is limited or delayed.
This comprehensive course covers a range of vital skills, including:
    • Airway Management • Rescue Breathing • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) • Treating Serious Bleeding and Bandaging • Managing Head & Spinal Injuries • Medical Emergency Triaging & Disaster Management
To date, IHIF has successfully conducted 81 PTC courses, comprising 34 sessions tailored for doctors, nurses, and paramedics, and 47 sessions catering to first responders such as the Indian Coast Guards, Police Personnel, Hotel Staff, Fire Brigade, and Home Guards across various locations like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Jodhpur, Bangalore, and Himachal Pradesh.

  • Road safety awareness

One of IHIF's primary goals is to promote awareness regarding safe road usage. To achieve this objective, it regularly organizes workshops focusing on safe driving practices and emphasizes the importance of wearing helmets.
With the corporate social responsibility (CSR) support from ICICI Lombard, HT Parekh Foundation/HDFC, Apollo Foundation, and Citigroup, IHIF has successfully educated over 130,000 children and parents. Additionally, it has distributed more than 70,000 helmets to children riding as passengers, especially those whose parents solely rely on two-wheelers for transportation. These impactful programs have been conducted across various locations, including Noida, New Delhi, Jodhpur, Ludhiana, Bihar, and Mumbai.

Additionally, they have initiated informative camps in neighbouring regions such as Old Age Homes and Special Kids Homes, focusing on educating these communities on various health and hygiene-related topics.

  • Peer mentoring

Peer Mentors are individuals who, having themselves coped with their condition and learned to navigate community resources, offer guidance to fellow patients in managing similar challenges and pursuing life goals. These goals may involve returning to school, achieving independent living, or resuming work post-injury. IHIF has collaborated with ESCIP Trust India to connect individuals using wheelchairs due to various ambulatory disabilities—such as traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury—with these Peer Mentors.
ESCIP's Peer Mentors impart crucial skills for wheelchair use and independent living through a transitional living program. Participants in this program also benefit from the services provided by IHIF's Rehab Centre in DCWA. Furthermore, ESCIP's Peer Mentors introduce mentees to adaptive sports communities and online support groups. This alliance has seen 55 patients transition into becoming Peer Mentors and active contributors to their communities.
