Our Vision: At the Transforming Rural India Foundation (TRIF), we envision a future where every individual, especially those in the most marginalized Read more regions, lives in dignity, free from poverty and inequality. We aspire towards a tomorrow where every locality, no matter how remote or challenged, transforms into a thriving, vibrant community. This is the essence of Thoughtful Tarakki—a path that prioritizes the well-being of people and the places they inhabit. Our Mission: Guided by the Regenerative Development Manifesto, our mission is to democratize development. We staunchly believe that communities possess the innate power to chart their trajectory of progress. Their potential, when unshackled, can overcome the most rigid structural barriers, ensuring sustainable development driven by genuine needs and aspirations. With a spirit of "can-do-ness", we stimulate these communities to address and surmount obstacles, be it limited access to knowledge or the challenges of adopting evidence-based practices. Our Approach: Since 2016, TRIF has been at the forefront of pioneering an integrated, grassroots approach towards rural development. Today, while our roots remain grounded in fostering multi-sector changes through collaborations with community-based institutes like SHGs, PRIs, and FLWs, our wings have embraced the broader ethos of Regenerative Development. Our Legacy: Registered in 2016 as a non-profit under section 8 company act, TRI is helmed by distinguished individuals with vast development experience. Our advisory board, headed by Ms. Bharti Gupta Ramola, and our statutory board led by Dr. Sanjiv Phansalkar, embody our commitment to excellence and impact. Operational leadership, delivered by Anish Kumar and Anirban Ghose, anchors our initiatives in real-world challenges and solutions.

Issue

Our Commitment: The story of "Stranded India", with its 100,000 villages representing a vast number of the world's multi-dimensional poor, compels us. We are unwavering committed to infusing these languishing localities with hope and progress. This involves investments in local capacities, businesses, and entrepreneurs, buttressing infrastructure, fostering public services, and nurturing equitable partnerships within a burgeoning private ecosystem. TRI works on the issues related to - Income Prosperity - Primary Education - Health & Nutrition - Governance - Gender Equity

Action

In practice, this means: Empowering Communities: Fortifying grassroots community institutions such as Women’s Federations and Panchayati Raj Institutions. Our core principle is to prepare these communities to spearhead their change processes. Boosting Rural Prosperity: Mobilizing investments to foster livelihood assets, enhance knowledge, and hone skills to uplift rural productivity. Facilitating Market Access: Establishing aggregation mechanisms like FPOs/PGs to ensure communities have robust access to markets. Scaling Solutions through government: Collaborating intimately with state and national governments to amplify and replicate successful strategies. Outcome-Oriented: Persistently tracking and emphasizing tangible results.

Programs

  • Public Policy in Action

TRI's Public Policy in Action (PPIA) practice is one of three key pillars driving our mission to transform rural India. Operating across 58 districts and providing strategic support to central ministries, PPIA aims to strengthen public service capacity to drive developmental change, uphold citizen rights, improve the delivery of welfare schemes, and foster integrated governance among public, community, and market institutions. The government plays a crucial role in enhancing well-being and supporting people in improving their lives, particularly in underserved rural communities. Recognizing that "activating government services" is a vital lever for transforming India's villages, our approach is to collaborate constructively with government bodies toward this shared purpose. With a clear understanding of government mandates, we bring community insights, evidence, and experiences to the forefront, helping to align policy with ground realities and ensuring meaningful impact.

  • Community Action Labs

The CAL's outreach spans 31 districts, 36 blocks, 1,881 Gram Panchayats, and 3,504 villages, encompassing 46,156 women self-help groups with around 6 lakh women, of which 53% are from Scheduled Tribes/Scheduled Castes. CAL blocks align with these development blocks, forming the TRI's direct engagement with communities and local institutions. These blocks serve as centers for demonstration and learning, intersecting with other practices like Public Policy in Action (PPiA) and Bending Markets for Flourishing Localities (BMFL). This integrated approach supports creating locality compacts that foster collaborations among community collectives, local government, and public functionaries, emphasizing an intersectoral strategy of "Community First." The focus is on active citizenship, effective state, and market engagement, aiming to address community-driven development aspirations and outcomes.
