VSF is a not-for-profit organization registered as Trust in India. VisionSpring aims to enable affordable eye care for low-income individuals. VisionS Read morepring reduces the exclusivity and expenses associated with high-quality eye screening and eyeglasses and makes it easily accessible and affordable. In India, an estimated 60 crore people require eyeglasses for vision correction. Blurry vision compromises one’s ability to work effectively, to read, and to navigate surroundings with ease and safety. When people’s livelihoods depend on seeing clearly, uncorrected presbyopia and refractive error can force an otherwise highly capable person to stop working prematurely. With vision access, we will add at least 5% to India’s GDP and catapult the nation into a different level of economic growth. The social return on investment in eyeglasses in 23x and can catalyze a nation’s growth trajectory and push millions out of poverty. United Nations General Assembly Resolution in July 2021 unanimously voted to adopt the “Eye Health for All” resolution and recognized eye health as a driver of multiple Sustainable Development Goals. We aim to create awareness and access for eyeglasses and engage in advocacy to ensure there are supportive policies in India to help people see clearly
Issue
Poor vision is the largest unmet disability in the world. According to National Blindness and Visual Impairment Survey India, 2015-2019 report, refractive error (29.6%) is a leading cause of visual impairment in the population aged 0-49 years and the second most cause of visual impairment in population aged ≥50 years. Whereas the prevalence of uncorrected refractive error (URE) is 11.5% and uncorrected presbyopia is 74.2% in a population aged ≥50 years. Annually $227 billion is the economic loss due to uncorrected vision. The effect on productivity is larger than any other health intervention reported in the scientific literature trials for low- and middle-income counties. Eyeglasses are a cost-effective and easy way to boost both household income and business performance in lower-income communities VisionSpring aims to address this issue by providing affordable eye care for low-income individuals suffering from vision impairment. Our focus is to work with artisans, weavers, tea & coffee plantation workers, and other labor communities who are into vision demanding trades for their livelihood. We also work with school children, elderly, and drivers for their improved well being.
Action
Make India into a Clear Vision Nation where visual divide is bridged, and everyone has access to good eyesight. The overarching goal is India Clear Vision Mission. The Mission’s objective is to enable 600 million (60 crore) people in India who need eyeglasses to see clearly get access to them. We achieve it through three programmes: See to Earn: works with low-income communities, weavers/artisans, tea tribes, and factory workers. In 2022, it screened 4,03,396 people and provided 2,04,721 eyeglasses. 80% of people touched were First Time Wearers (FTWs) of eyeglasses. See to Learn: works with school children (and teachers/ school administration staff). In 2022, it screened 9,51,273 people and provided 61,977 eyeglasses. 72% were FTWs of eyeglasses. See to be Safe: works with commercial vehicle drivers and allied transport workers. In 2022, it screened 79,885 people and provided 56,883 eyeglasses. 84% were FTWs of eyeglasses. We encourage all corporates to integrate vision access to their existing CSR programmes in education, livelihood and preventive health care.

See to Earn
According to a report by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC, it is estimated that there are over 70 lakhs artisans in India, and among them, the handloom sector provides direct employment to 43 lakhs handloom weavers, of which 36.33 lakh live in rural areas. Similar is the population engaged in other vision demanding works such as tea plucking, farming, processing etc. Recognizing and promoting their work can lead to a more inclusive and thriving economy.
Eyeglasses are important for all these workers, as they involve intricate and detailed work. They need clear vision to handle small materials, threads, and tools with precision, to see the colour of tea leaves etc. Improved eye sight can improve the product quality and quantity, and hence improved productivity and income. We set up eye screening units to cater to these population across the country.

See to Learn
The "See to Learn" program addresses the impact of vision impairment on children. The shift to online learning during the COVID-19 had negative effects on children's eye health and academic performance, often leading to school dropouts. Wearing eyeglasses has been shown to significantly improve learning outcomes. Approximately 72% of those who were provided eyeglasses through our previous programmes were First Time Wearers (FTWs).
We conduct eye screening in government schools across India. We have a team of community mobilzer, optometrist, and counsellor for spectacle dispensing. We train the government school teachers for pre-screening, and those who are identified with vision problems are directed for screening by optometrist. We have range of spectacles with colours and frames from which students can choose as per their choice. We train and aware both teachers, parents and children on good eye practices, health eating as well as on continued wearing of spectacles. -
See to be Safe
Vision is essential for driving, and good vision is needed to identify road hazards, read signs and see the dashboard. To understand the need of driver’s visual health, VisionSpring conducted a cross sectional study to understand driver’s visual health and need for visual correction, knowledge, attitude and practices of drivers towards eye health, explores the driver’s perceptions about the usefulness of eyeglasses to improve on-the-job road safety and driver’s personal well-being. The study revealed that 25% drivers cannot see road signs 20-30 m away; 68% never had eyes tested for application of driving license or renewal of license; 43% drivers identified blurred vision as a main issue while driving. Majority(80%) reported glare from vehicle headlights affects vision; 76% drivers stated eyeglasses are essential for safety and optimal job performance. Hence in this programme we conduct eye screening of drivers and allied staff in collaboration with transport hubs across India.
