Belaku Trust, founded by professionals in health and social sciences, focuses on enhancing the quality of life in Kanakapura villages. Beginning in 19 Read more95, it identified numerous challenges such as poverty, caste discrimination, and inadequate healthcare and education facilities. Over seventeen years, it built trust within communities, transitioning from research to implementing programmes addressing health and nutrition issues, eventually expanding to income generation activities and educational support for girls from impoverished families. Belaku Trust believes in empowering communities rather than offering handouts, advocating for community involvement, strengthening existing services, and valuing everyone's contributions towards community development. Belaku Trust's vision is of inclusive communities where individuals are empowered to shape their own lives and community development. Its mission is to promote health and development, particularly for women and children, through research, community-based interventions, and collaboration with existing service providers. The trust emphasizes the importance of community ownership and collaboration to achieve lasting change and improve the lives of marginalized individuals.

Smart Start Programme
The Smart Start programme by Belaku Trust targets women during pregnancy and post-childbirth, offering vital support and information through trained Gelathis. These community workers address crucial health topics like nutrition, anaemia prevention, prenatal care, and breastfeeding, ensuring mothers and newborns receive necessary care and guidance, especially in nuclear families lacking traditional support systems. Through home visits, the programme aims to promote the health and well-being of both mother and child beyond formal preschool hours, enabling optimal development for both.

Pre - School Programme
Belaku Trust enhances the government's Integrated Child Development Scheme by deploying trained community aides, Gelathis, to support Anganwadi workers in promoting early childhood education and health. Gelathis assist in preschool education, monitor children's nutrition and health, and introduce music and dance into the curriculum for holistic development. Starting in six villages in 2006, the project has expanded due to positive community response, with villagers contributing funds to sustain it. Belaku aims to extend this initiative to more villages, advocating for policy influence based on its success in improving early childhood development and community engagement.
