Promoting Active Citizenship and Life Skills Education Active citizens are individuals who adhere to democratic values and continually engage with co Read moremmunities, authorities, and institutions to drive societal change. The goal of the organisation is to instil critical knowledge, values, attitudes, and skills in young people, empowering them to positively collaborate with authorities and communities to secure their rights. It stresses that responsibilities are equally important and should accompany rights, achieved through Citizenship and Life Skills Education. According to UNESCO, Citizenship Education aims to educate children from an early age to become enlightened citizens actively involved in societal decisions. While today's civics education covers the Constitution and government institutions, there is an opportunity to enhance this learning experience. By adopting a holistic and experiential approach, it aims to help young people understand the real-life applications of civic education and its wider context within democratic life. This approach aims to inspire responsible citizens who uphold democratic values. Supporting schools in fostering a democratic culture within classrooms empowers children to confidently express their thoughts and participate actively in matters affecting their lives. By connecting theoretical ideals with real-life experiences, the organisation equips students with the knowledge and skills to become engaged, thoughtful, and active citizens. This approach prepares them to value integrity, community, and a sense of responsibility, shaping a better society. Encouraging and empowering young people to become active citizens capable of identifying and solving local and national problems, committed to eliminating discrimination, inequality, and indifference, requires intervention and multi-faceted approaches: 1. Early Introduction of Citizenship and Life Skills Education: Initiate Citizenship and Life Skills Education in schools and colleges. Engage in interactive and experiential learning methodologies to ensure a more comprehensive understanding and application. These initiatives focus on imparting crucial knowledge regarding rights, responsibilities, local governance, entitlements, health, and hygiene. 2. Cultivating a Democratic Culture in Educational Institutions: Promote democratic principles in schools and colleges by fostering mutual respect between teachers/administration and students. Encourage open expression of views, active student participation in institutional decision-making, and involve students in matters concerning their education. Citizenship and Life Skills Education instils confidence in young individuals, preparing them for adulthood and contributing to building a better nation. Its significance lies in various aspects: Empowerment through knowledge of rights and the ability to secure entitlements. Providing a platform for student voices in schools/colleges and communities. Early engagement with authorities and peers in addressing concerns. Developing self-confidence to tackle everyday challenges. Preparation for responsible citizenship and professional life. Promotion of mutual respect and acceptance of diversity. Active Citizenship embodies a set of beliefs and behaviours enhancing the quality of life for all, focusing on four aspects known as the "four Cs of Active Citizenship": 1. CONCERN: For community members, the environment, and being informed about societal issues. 2. COOPERATE: Understanding government roles, fulfilling responsibilities, and respecting laws. 3. COEXIST: Practicing equality and celebrating diversity. 4. CONFRONT: Standing against injustices to safeguard rights and ensure equality for all. CMCA curriculum integrates vital life skills that are the foundation of Active Citizenship: Empathy: Understanding others' perspectives and accepting diversity. Critical Thinking: Challenging assumptions and seeking alternative viewpoints. Creative Thinking, Effective Communication, Problem Solving, and Interpersonal Relationships: Key skills cultivated through experiential learning, fostering Active Citizenship values across various spheres. Through Active Citizenship and Life Skills Education, it aims to nurture responsible, thoughtful, and engaged citizens capable of effecting positive change in their communities and beyond.

Programs

  • Magic Box

The Magic Box program is a teacher-led initiative that employs entertaining and interactive learning cards to impart essential skills and values to children. These cards focus on fostering key attributes like self-awareness, self-regulation, gender equality, diversity appreciation, environmental consciousness, and empathy towards animals. Specifically crafted to be inclusive and accessible to children from diverse backgrounds, Magic Box utilizes pictorial learning cards and props.
Every day, the teacher selects a card from the Magic Box, initiating an engaging activity lasting 10-15 minutes. These activities encourage children to explore the world around them and embark on a journey of self-discovery.

  • My library for a better me

As part of the Oduva Belaku initiative by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, Government of Karnataka, CMCA initiated "My Library for a Better Me." This citizenship and life skills program operates across 55 Panchayat libraries in Tumakuru and Ramanagara. Children are enrolled in a comprehensive 3-year program that involves regular visits to these libraries. Trained CMCA mentors are present weekly to offer guidance and inspiration.
Children participating in the program have the opportunity to choose from a variety of citizenship and life skills activities. They can either engage in these activities at home or within the library premises. This engagement is further reinforced through "Together for Change" action projects, encouraging children to collaborate and drive community transformation through teamwork.

  • Children’s Village Sabha

The Makkala Grama Sabha (Children’s Village Sabha) stands as a pioneering venture initiated by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Department, Government of Karnataka. This innovative program provides children with a practical encounter with democracy. Through the Makkala Grama Sabha, children convene with local government officials to deliberate upon matters concerning their well-being, protection, and overall development. This unique initiative recognizes children as equal citizens, empowering them to exercise their right to participate in decisions that secure their other fundamental rights.
Since 2011, CMCA has actively invigorated these Sabhas and witnessed remarkable changes at the grassroots level. Prior to the Sabha meetings, CMCA conducts informative sessions in schools and libraries. These sessions aim to deepen children's comprehension of the significance of this distinctive platform and their entitlement to participate.

  • Multigrade Club Programme

The Multigrade Club Programme operates by conducting a dedicated 'CMCA period' every week throughout the academic year, specifically designed for students in grades 7 and 8. This initiative is led by trained CMCA educators or a designated school teacher and encompasses a diverse array of activities. These include conducting awareness campaigns, facilitating discussions, conducting school audits, organizing field trips, and initiating live calls to civic agencies. Students actively develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration through this program. The primary goal is to encourage students to explore issues within their communities, devise solutions, raise awareness, and interact with local authorities.
For students in other grades, CMCA offers Spark Workshops. These workshops introduce civic themes to students and serve as preparatory sessions for the 8th-grade Club program.

  • Catalyse

Tailored for young adults, Catalyse is a program that encompasses thematic sessions, moments of reflection, and a collaborative experiential project within a group setting. Supplementary resources like reading materials and opportunities for secondary research are also made available. This initiative provides students with platforms to actively participate and deepen their engagement with CMCA. Furthermore, it seamlessly integrates into skilling centres, fostering the development of critical workplace skills among participants.
