Divya Deepa Charitable Trust runs Kaliyuva Mane (meaning Home for Learning) - Kaliyuva Mane is a free residential alternative school for child laboure Read morers, school dropouts, children from broken families, dyslexic children, children with huge academic lag, who are not suitable for main stream formal schools. Kaliyuva Mane works on the principle ‘School for children’ rather than ‘Children for school’. Kaliyuva Mane was started in the year 2005 in a hut with 4 children. Kaliyuva Mane is accreditated by National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), an autonomous Institution under Dept. of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education (MOE), Govt. of India (AA No. O08062). Kaliyuva Mane is located in an area of 2 acres and 27 guntas, on the outskirts of Mysore city in a rural area, away from the hustle bustle of the city. The key features of Kaliyuva Mane are: • Admission of children happens throughout the year because there is no fixed period for a child to slip into difficult situations or for an out-of-school child to regain interest in studies. • An informal talk/test is held with the guardians and the child at the time of admission. The purpose of this test is not a criterion for the rejection of the child, but to ascertain whether the child is really an opportunity-deprived child. As a sign of formal acceptance parents/guardians sign an affidavit. • Children are provided heathy food, clothing, healthcare and recreational facilities free of cost apart from alternative education. • A child need not attend the classes immediately after joining Kaliyuva Mane. Enough time is given for a child to build rapport with the school, staff members and other children. This gives ample time for a child with turbulent past to adapt to the new environment at Kaliyuva Mane. • An uncluttered mind is a prerequisite for learning. Love, Care and Empathy are the ingredients to create a happy mind. Happy minds learn faster. So, each child of Kaliyuva Mane gets adequate emotional support from the staff and volunteers. A homely atmosphere prevails in Kaliyuva Mane at all times. • Children are not graded as 1st standard, 2nd standard, 3rd standard etc. For e.g. a 12-year-old school dropout at an academic level of 2nd standard cannot be integrated with either age-appropriate 7th standard or with knowledge appropriate 3rd standard. So, children are grouped into flexible teams based on their age, academic level, pace of learning and emotional readiness of the child to be in that particular team. Meaningful temporary names are given to such teams. • Once a child demonstrates an interest in education, a thorough assessment is done to identify the academic level in all the subjects. Based on this, a tailored curriculum is designed using state and central syllabi, reference materials, and teaching aids specific to the child's needs. • No fear-instilling annual examinations are held till class X public examination. Instead, informal tests are conducted at regular intervals. The purpose of conducting these tests is not to label the child as ‘pass’ or ‘fail’, but quantify the child’s learning, re-fix the curriculum and discover new methods of teaching. • Kaliyuva Mane is neither a conventional English medium school nor Kannada medium school. Most of the children are from rural uneducated homes, where English is an alien language. But Now-a-days, English is a global language. So, core subjects like Science, Mathematics and Social Science are taught both in mother tongue and English. But children take class X public examination in English medium. • Once a child acquires the prerequisites for understanding the 10th standard syllabus, they are enrolled for the examination as a private candidate under the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination board. • Kaliyuva Mane is infusing innovation into every facet of education. Some are: Star rewarding system’ to identify and encourage positive attitude in children, Kids’ Bank to make the children understand the value of money and its limitations, Kids’ Court to settle the disputes among children, Kids’ shop etc. • Kaliyuva Mane is an eco-conscious school. It has implemented eco-friendly practices like rainwater harvesting, solar-powered lighting, biogas plant, a model of eco-toilet, Proper solid waste management system and organic farming etc. Children actively engage in these practices, reducing the school's carbon footprint and learning valuable eco-friendly practices. • In Kaliyuva Mane, there is a good work culture where all children participate in cooking, dairy, horticulture, Campus Cleaning work apart from academics, under the supervision of staff members. We have constructed a skill-learning Centre, ‘Kaushala’, to introduce all children of Kaliyuva Mane to various skills like plumbing, hair cutting, electrical, tailoring, welding, painting, etc. to hone their flair for hands-on-learning and expand their skill set. This opportunity will also increase the scope of their job prospects after completing their 10th standard.
Issue
Issue: Education empowers an individual permanently and every empowered individual in turn empowers the society and the nation. For a nation/society to progress, two ingredients are vital: natural resources and human resources. India has better natural resources than Japan. India is the most populous country in the world. Education is a tool to transform ordinary human beings into human resource. But India’s rural educational scenario is very gloomy at present. Following facts corroborate this. 1. Due to poverty, ignorance of the parents and rigidity of the formal schools, many children remain out-of-school. According to an article titled (Education of out-of-school children), published in Vijayavani dated 07-02-2023. About 85,000 children have remained out-of-school in Karnataka state in the year 2022-23. 2. The Hon’ble High court of Karnataka State has filed a Suo moto Public Interest Litigation in the year 2013 itself about this important issue of education of out-of-school children (WP 15768). 3. World Bank has warned of a learning crisis in India: "…In rural India, nearly three-quarters of students in grade 3 could not solve a two-digit subtraction such as 46 – 17 and by grade 5, half still could not do so…. This learning crisis is moral and economic,” World Group President Jim Yong Kim said. “When delivered well, education promises young people employment, better earnings, good health, and a life without poverty. For communities, education spurs innovation, strengthens institutions, and fosters social cohesion. But these benefits depend on learning and schooling without learning is a wasted opportunity. More than that, it's a great injustice.”

Kaliyuva Mane was started in June 2005 literally in a hut with 14 children, out of which 4 were resident children. Presently we are providing nutritious food, accommodation, clothing, healthcare, recreational facilities apart from alternative education to 100 opportunity deprived children. In the year 2010, the first batch of students appeared for class X Board examination in English medium. Till now 105 children have appeared for this coveted class X Board examination. 95 children have cleared this examination in English medium 43% of these children have scored more than 60% aggregate marks. Many are gainfully employed. Many are pursuing college education. Some have become successful entrepreneurs. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), an autonomous organisation of the Government of India has produced a 39m24s Documentary Film on Kaliyuva Mane. We request you to watch the same at the following link: https://youtu.be/fDRCGbPOIEw When Infosys founder Dr N.R. Narayana Murthy visited Kaliyuva Mane on January 16,2011 his remarks in our visitor’s register were: "I am so happy to see the wonderful work being done by Mr. Ananth & team to empower the 'Forgotten India'. More power to you! Best wishes!". In the year 2011, when the automobile giant Mahindra & Mahindra launched the ‘Spark The Rise’ contest, inviting ideas from the Indians for the development of India, our project, ‘Education of rural out of system Children’, emerged as second runners up in the grand finale among 1346 projects which were featured and won a grant of ₹20 lakhs.

Care for the environment
Spread across 2.5 acres, Kaliyuva Mane offers a tranquil and verdant setting with over 300 trees, providing an ideal sanctuary for children to enjoy a peaceful environment away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
In addition to education, the school actively implements eco-friendly initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, eco-toilet, bio-gas plant, solar-powered lighting, and more. Engaging in these activities, children imbibe an eco-conscious mindset from an early age. -
Volunteers' honourarium
In Kaliyuva Mane many children are from unstable families. So, some children stay on the campus even during holidays, thus making Kaliyuva Mane practically a 24x365 school. Resident school needs residential staff members like cooks, child care givers (wardens), security staff, driver, resident teachers, skeleton admin staff etc. Hence 80% of Kaliyuva Mane staff stay on the campus. We are providing them food, accommodation and basic healthcare. They serve with the spirit of volunteers.
Human resource is critical for the success of any organization. Donors are encouraged to sponsor one staff member's honorarium. They can always interact with the particular volunteer they are sponsoring. -
Pragathi – Complete care and education of one opportunity-deprived child
The Pragathi program:
The 'Pragathi – Care & educate a Child' programme has been designed for donors seeking to directly support a child within the school. Through this sponsorship program, donors have the opportunity to ensure comprehensive care for a child, covering food, clothing, accommodation, healthcare, recreation and child-centric education. In essence, the donor's involvement parallels the act of adopting a child, with the organization guaranteeing the child's complete well-being.
Prior to making a sponsorship commitment, donors are encouraged to visit the school and engage with the child. The organisation believes that beyond the financial contribution, ongoing interaction between the donor and the child will significantly benefit the child's future.
Donors are encouraged to act as mentors, offering consistent guidance and support to the child. -
Adhar
The ‘Adhar’ – Management of land, water, construction and maintenance of buildings and approach roads, Electric power management, Construction and maintenance of playground etc. is the Adhar (basic requirement) for any institution. These are critical for the overall progress of the children of our Kaliyuva Mane. Donors are encouraged to support this. It is equivalent to supporting infrastructure needs of the children. Donor’s contribution will be judiciously used for the purpose. A donor can personally visit the site and witness the impact of his/her contribution. The organisation will also be sending the pictures of the work done.
