Leapforword is a product NGO that is working to promote learning of English language among students of regional language schools, which do not have th Read moree best of infrastructure and children from these schools regularly find themselves behind others educated in private schools. As an answer to the issue Leapforword works on Its English Literacy Programme (ELP). This programme provides a method to teachers in regional language schools, who cannot speak English, to interact with students in their own languages and teach English such that the children can reach a stage where they can read, write, understand & build grammatically correct sentences. It has reached out to over 3.15 lakh teachers, 3.3 lakh students across 182 districts in 12 states in Its efforts to promote English Language teaching.

Issue

English may not be the official or native language in India, however, over time it has come to be an essential skill that widens the scope of professional growth and opportunities for individuals. Only 10% of Indians speak English, while proficiency levels are as low as 2% in some states such as Bihar and Jharkhand . On an average 23.7% of Ist to Vth graders, and total 48.3 1st graders are unable to read even Capital letters in English. (ASER 2022). Being a diverse country India has 22+ official and 750+ regional dialects. Most individuals from vernacular languages struggle to access quality education from elite institutes such as IITs, IIMs, and Medical colleges, that use English as a medium of instruction. Unable to read, write, and comprehend elementary-level English may restrict them from filling out application forms, applying for higher education, or accessing professional courses. Therefore it is critical to introduce students to Foundational Literacy, including English learning early in their education, a point emphasised by the National Education Policy 2020. LFW’s experiences highlighted that despite professional degrees, most teachers in regional language government schools were unable to speak English and, therefore unable to teach English to students effectively. The ground experience led to further research and clarity. Research shows that English fluency increases opportunities for professional growth significantly, allowing access to better jobs, access to higher education, and other opportunities. A recent study reveals that the hourly wages are 34% higher for males who speak fluent English and 13% higher for men who speak little English (Azam Et.al. 2013). To overcome the bottleneck in English literacy, and to build a sustainable model, the training of teachers seemed the first step. Hence, the English Literacy Program was designed; an English learning pedagogy that was scalable, and could achieve the goal of making India English literate at a minimum cost and time. By 2015, the ELP reading materials and learning pedagogy were developed, and replicated across 11 states, and 247 districts over, impacting 3.1 million students to date.
