Pehchan, meaning 'identity' in Hindi, is a community-based NGO in Mumbai, India, committed to uplifting the marginalized homeless population. It cente Read morers its efforts on recognizing and reinforcing the identity of these citizens who call footpaths, street corners, and other public spaces home. Pehchan's mission revolves around empowering the homeless to assert their rights and break the cycle of poverty, while concurrently fostering societal conditions conducive to such empowerment. At Pehchan, the focus extends beyond mere provision; the organization actively supports homeless citizens, facilitating the acquisition of crucial identity documents to enhance employability and advocating for their rights. Addressing issues like shelter availability, workplace harassment, and wage-related matters, Pehchan strives to create a more equitable society. A notable initiative is the 'BegharMazdoor Helpline,' launched in 2014, simplifying access for the homeless to engage with Pehchan. Collaborating with volunteers and interns from esteemed institutions further amplifies Pehchan's impact. Originating as the 'Beghar Adhikar Abhiyan' in 2011, a movement spearheaded by social activist Brijesh Arya, Pehchan recognizes that the homeless seek autonomy rather than mere welfare. Evolving into a dynamic organization, Pehchan maintains a strong grassroots network, shaping its policies through continuous community dialogue. The people's initiative remains pivotal, with empowerment activities designed around it, emphasizing Pehchan not as an external welfare provider but as a catalyst for self-empowerment.
Programs
-
Identity Initiative
The organisation, with a focus on identity empowerment, addresses the challenge faced by homeless citizens in obtaining essential documents such as ration cards and voter IDs. It aims to provide documented, state-acknowledged identities, crucial for accessing Government schemes. Community leaders are trained to navigate formalities, and outreach programmes verify the legality of residence. Beyond documentation, the organisation conducts sensitization programmes to combat social discrimination, engaging students, corporate ventures, Government employees, and the public in workshops, discussions, and visual media initiatives. Over 2000 homeless citizens have benefited from obtaining at least one basic identification document since the movement's inception.

Emergency Support Programme
In times of emergency, the organisation responds to the pressing needs of homeless individuals facing threats of eviction, police harassment, and medical emergencies. Recognizing the challenges in accessing medical services due to a lack of information and biases, the team assists in hospital admissions and rehabilitation shelter placements when necessary. Evictions, often accompanied by violence, are a daily reality for the homeless, with property confiscation by authorities. The organisation supports individuals in such situations, engaging with authorities and providing basic legal advice. Addressing police harassment, particularly under vague laws like the Bombay (Prevention of) Beggary Act, 1959, the organisation advocates for the rights of homeless citizens, aiming to counteract societal insensitivity towards this vulnerable population.
