Shramjivi Janata Sahayyak Mandal (SJSM), founded by youth from nomadic tribal communities near the Koyna Dam, has evolved into a leading grassroots NG Read moreO. It focuses on sustainable livelihoods tied to natural resources, forming over 60 cooperatives that benefit 27,540 families. These cooperatives support activities like dairying, fishing, SHGs, and herbal products. The organisation also addresses gender justice, health, education, and disaster preparedness, extending its efforts to over 500 villages across Satara, Sangli, and Raigad districts. Following the 2005 Konkan floods, SJSM launched rehabilitation and livelihood projects for tribal communities. Its watershed development spans 25,000 hectares, supported by NABARD, Bajaj Auto, and Government schemes. The organisation has promoted 1,000 SHGs, mobilising ₹10 million in credit. Collaborating with partners like NABARD, Ford Foundation, Oxfam, ITC, and Asian Paints, SJSM continues to empower communities and drive sustainable development.

Livelihood Programme
Shramjivi Janata Sahayyak Mandal (SJSM) has established sustainable, natural resource-based livelihood initiatives in the remote Koyna region of Satara. Efforts include dairy and fishing cooperatives, food and herbal product processing, and women-led enterprises using local produce. A dedicated facility at Rammala ensures quality production of herbal goods under “Koyna Herbals.” Also, microfinance services support low-income families through credit, savings, training, and empowerment opportunities, fostering self-reliance and rural entrepreneurship.

Shramjivi Janata Sahayyak Mandal (SJSM) emphasises skill-based training for rural youth, offering programs in tailoring, fashion, beauty, computers, hospitality, and agro-business. In earlier years, SJSM documented traditional herbal knowledge from village healers before concluding the project in 2000. As a former lead NGO for the Reproductive and Child Health program in Satara, it organised health camps and awareness initiatives. Current efforts are focused on women’s and adolescent health across rural communities.
