Quarry Workers Development Society

Our organisation works towards socially transforming the lives of quarry workers in 12 districts of Tamil Nadu. Around 750,000 families are dependent Read more on quarry labour in Tamil Nadu. They work in extremely dangerous conditions; their rights constantly violated and make as little as Rs. 60-80 (less than $2). This makes it almost impossible for parents to afford health care or their children’s education. We focus on four areas: educating quarry labourer’s children and thus reducing child labour; providing protection and better facilities at work through trade unions; rescuing and rehabilitating bonded labourers; and helping victims of quarry accidents where disease, amputations and even death are common. Our residential school for the children of quarry workers enrol 150-200 children every year while also ensuring workers retain their rights through our 40,000 strong membership trade union.
