Potential Unlocked: Help Rural Youth in Odisha Reach Their Dreams

Gouri is only 14. But her childhood is already slipping away.

In a remote village of Gajapati district, Odisha, Gouri was forced to drop out of school at age 12.

Her father and brothers had migrated for low-paid labor. Her mother was too ill to work. So Gouri stayed behind—cooking, cleaning, and caring for her younger siblings.

Behind all the responsibilities, she held a fragile dream:

To see a world beyond her village. To earn a dignified living.

If no one helps, that dream will disappear—just like it does for thousands of underprivileged children every year. Not because they lack courage or aspiration, but because they lack support, exposure, and someone to simply say:

“You can.”

At Social Shapes Foundation, we step in before it’s too late. We work with tribal and mining-affected youth in some of India’s most remote villages. Our trained local mentors—often young people from the same communities— sit with children like Gouri, listen to them, guide them, and help them reimagine what’s possible.

Our Impact So Far:

• 1,150 youth supported across 68 villages in 3 districts
• 250+ are in higher education
• 200+ cleared competitive exams
• 40+ dropouts (some after 8 years) returned to school
• 550+ gained basic digital literacy
• 60+ accessed scholarships

Gouri is one of them. She’s back in school, followed by her two sisters. Today, she dreams of becoming a flight attendant—a bold dream for someone who hadn’t even seen an aeroplane before.

But there are so many more young people to help.

This Year’s Goal:

We aim to reach 1,000 more rural youth across Odisha. With your support, we can:
