IGNITING HOPE! A Global Storytelling Fundraiser for Covid related Awareness

Mumbai First and Mumbai Storytellers Society are hosting a live fundraiser event, “Igniting Hope” - A Global Storytelling Fundraiser for Covid related efforts on 19th June 2021, 6pm IST onwards.

The spectacular line up of storytellers would be sharing stories of hope, courage and joy!! The array of eminent storytellers from all over the world includes Shereen Saif from Dubai, Mehak Mirza Prabhu from India, Hrishikesh Kannan from India, Lalit Prabhakar from India, Valentina Trivedi from India, Diane Ferlatte from United States of America, Dr Vayu Naidu from United Kingdom and Naseeruddin Shah from India.

Partnering with Mumbai First and Mumbai Storytellers Society for this storytelling fundraiser are Team Work Arts, Tantraa, BookASmile – the charity initiative of BookMyShow and Lions Clubs International.

The funds collected will go to Apnalaya who will exclusively use the funds for Awareness on COVID-19 Appropriate Behavior (CAB) and promoting Covid vaccination in the informal settlements of Mumbai. The donation links will be shared during the fundraiser.

BookASmile will match donations collected through this fundraiser up to five lakh rupees.

The Project - Community engagement to promote CAB and COVID vaccination promotion

India continues to be impacted due to the increased number of COVID-19 infection in the country, deeply affecting the economic and social conditions. There is an urgent need to ensure people to follow CAB along with an increase in the uptake of COVID-19 vaccination. There is also a large gap in the information people on the ground are looking for and the support they require for vaccination. The proposed project focuses on engaging with the population, especially the less-reached, through various channels and disseminating CAB messages and promoting COVID-19 vaccination.

What will your donations be used for?

The money raised will be used for Community based engagement activities for CAB and COVID vaccine promotion to approximately 11.5k households in Shivaji Nagar, M East Ward, Mumbai. The activities are: 

-Training of community volunteers

-Community based awareness activities on vaccine promotion and support for vaccine registration.

About the Beneficiary Organisation

Apnalaya works with the urban poor - ENABLING access to basic services, healthcare, education and livelihoods; EMPOWERING them to help themselves; and ENSURING provision of civic entitlements through advocacy with the government.

Although urban centres present real opportunities for poor people, they also create and feed conditions within which poverty spreads. Tackling the problem of Urban Poverty is complex. To effect change on the ground, through our three verticals - Health & Disability, Education & Livelihoods and Citizenship & Advocacy - Apnalaya takes a multi-dimensional approach, one where we work with Individuals, Communities and Government at various levels.

We work with some of the most underserved communities in Mumbai. Most of our work is focused in the M East ward of Mumbai, an area where people live adjacent to Asia oldest and largest dumping ground, and where, on average 145 people share one toilet seat. The average age at death here is 39, every second child is underweight, women’s participation in the labour force is 9.7% and a family of five typically survives on a combined monthly income of Rs. 13,555.
