Story

"I walk more than an hour to reach the Centre every day. I don’t want to miss even one class."

Roopa, 16, student at our Community Learning Centre

Roopa’s father is a gardener. Her mother takes care of the home and five other children. There’s no laptop at home. No quiet space to study. Courses in coding or robotics were never an option. Most were too expensive, too far, or didn’t feel safe for girls like her.

Then she found our Community Learning Centre in Kotla Mubarakpur, South Delhi.

Here, Roopa learned Scratch, Excel, and robotics. She built a traffic light model using sensors. She discovered mentors. She became one of our most regular students—always present, always curious.

Now, the Centre that made this possible is struggling to stay open.

What is the Community Learning Centre?

In February 2024, we started the Community Learning Centre in Kotla Mubarakpur, South Delhi—not as an add-on, but as a lifeline.

Across Delhi, bright students from low-income families are being pushed to the margins. The cost of higher education and skill-building programs has risen sharply. Private institutes charge anywhere between ₹30,000 and ₹2 lakhs for short-term courses in coding, robotics, and AI. For a family surviving on daily wages, these opportunities feel completely out of reach.

At the same time, Delhi has far fewer public college seats than needed. According to AISHE, only 8 colleges serve every one lakh eligible youth—well below the national average. Many students end up enrolling in distance learning, with no mentorship, no peer learning, and no digital access at home.

And in households where there’s no laptop, no quiet room, and no one else who’s been to college, the gap grows even wider.

This is especially true for girls—whose mobility, safety, and aspirations are often tightly restricted.

Yet the skills being priced out of their reach are not luxuries.

They are essential for survival and progress in today’s economy.

Fields like software development, AI, automation, and data science are among the fastest-growing and highest-paying careers in India. According to LinkedIn’s Emerging Jobs Report, roles like Full Stack Developer and AI Specialist have seen exponential demand. These are the jobs of the present—and the future.

We created the Centre to make sure that future doesn’t belong only to the privileged.

Inside this small but vital space, students learn Scratch, Excel, and robotics. They build models with their own hands. They receive mentorship, access a safe study zone, and explore careers that once felt impossible.

156 students have joined in just four months. Over a third are girls. Some have already applied for jobs. Others, like Roopa, now dream of teaching others what they’ve learned.

This is not just a learning centre. For many of them, it is the only door they have to a better life.

And now, that door risks being shut.

The Urgency

The Centre is working. Students are coming. Courses are in full swing.

But behind the scenes, we’re holding things together with what little we have. The donor support that kept the Centre running is currently on pause. And without urgent funding, we may not be able to continue.

This isn’t a request for expansion. It’s about survival.

Every week, new students walk in with hope. Some travel for over an hour, like Roopa, just to access a laptop, a mentor, or a quiet corner to learn. And every week, we’re faced with the hard truth that this space might not be here for them tomorrow.

We are doing everything we can. But without timely support, the electricity, the facilitators, the internet—everything that keeps this place alive—could slip out of reach.

This is not about losing a room. It’s about losing possibility.

For Roopa. For the 156 others. For the many who are still waiting to come in.

How You Can Help

We know there are many causes asking for your attention.

That’s why we’re truly grateful that you’ve taken a moment to hear Roopa’s story—and to understand what this Centre means to so many students like her.

Right now, we’re doing everything we can to keep it going. But we can’t do it alone.

Just ₹1,000 can support one student for a full month—covering their access to classes, mentorship, internet, electricity, and learning materials.

If you’re able to contribute, thank you.

If you can share this campaign with someone who might want to help, we’d be equally grateful.

And if you’d like to visit or speak with us, our door is always open.

Your support—of any kind—can help ensure this space remains open, safe, and full of possibility for the young people who need it most.

Thank you for believing in their potential.

Before You Go

For Roopa—and many like her—this Centre is more than just a classroom. It’s the one place where learning feels possible. Where no one asks for fees. Where dreams in code and circuits are finally within reach.

Today, we’re doing everything we can to keep this space alive. But we can’t do it alone.

Your support—whether it’s ₹1,000 or simply sharing this campaign—helps us hold the door open a little longer. For one more student. One more month. One more breakthrough.

And if you’re wondering whether your contribution will be used responsibly—please know this:
