Divya, a bright and determined student from Uttam School in Haridwar, dreams of a future full of opportunities. But every month, her education is interrupted by a challenge beyond her control—her menstruation. The discomfort of her cycle, combined with a lack of access to affordable menstrual hygiene products, forces Divya to stay home during these crucial days. Without proper menstrual management, she misses out on education, and like many girls, faces the risk of falling behind. For some, this leads to dropping out altogether, cutting short their dreams.

Divya’s story is not unique. Across India, period poverty affects millions of girls, threatening their health, education, and overall empowerment. according to NFHS-5 staggering—70% of girls cannot afford sanitary pads, and only 48% are aware of proper menstrual hygiene practices. Without safe disposal methods or access to adequate menstrual management, girls are left to navigate this natural process in silence and discomfort. The stigma surrounding menstruation further adds to their challenges, making many feel embarrassed or ashamed.

At ISRN, we believe that access to menstrual hygiene is key to empowering girls like Divya. Through our Project SHE: (Sanitation, Hygiene & Empowerment), we are installing pad vending machines and incinerators in government schools, ensuring safe and accessible menstrual products. These tools don’t just provide hygiene—they offer girls the freedom to manage their menstrual cycle with dignity and remain engaged in their education. Additionally, we are promoting education on menstrual hygiene management to challenge cultural taboos and ensure proper disposal solutions are available.
