Story

Hi, my name is Satyam Shrivastav, and I’m from District Mau, in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Today, I want to address a critical issue in education — the "elephant in the room." India has over 15 lakh schools and 44 crore children, with an average of 293 children per school. Yet, many children continue to struggle despite the vast network of government and private schools.

Here are some key points to consider:

1. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN): Over 50% of children in Grade 5 can't read texts meant for Grade 2, reflecting a serious gap in basic education.

2. Teacher-Student Ratio: Many rural schools have one teacher for 100-120 children, leaving little room for individual attention.

3. Social and Emotional Intelligence: Early childhood is crucial for developing emotional intelligence, but most schools overlook this aspect.

4. Long-term Impact: Without these foundational skills, children may struggle throughout their lives, impacting their future and society as a whole.

Why is this happening? Ever thought about how learning was in ancient times? Learning spaces were personal and holistic. They were community-driven, with strong mentor-student relationships that fostered growth beyond just academics. Today, it’s even harder. There’s a lack of positive inspiration in neighborhoods, social evils are ever-present, the virtual world is overwhelming, and there’s a lack of deep human connection in families and society. Parents, unsure of what else to do, send their children to school, thinking it’s enough. But is it really?

At Chaitanya Kul, we address this gap by nurturing children from the families of laborers, landless farmers, and small shopkeepers, helping them to reach their potential while fostering shared values that bring us all together as a community.

I started Chaitanya Kul in 2018, and we officially became a registered trust in 2019. We’re like a modern-day gurukul in the village! We are home to 30 children, ages 5 to 18, who come from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. to engage in meaningful activities like campus cleaning, cooking, eating together, playing outdoor sports, dancing, and reflecting on our day. We focus on cultivating values like service, responsibility, self-motivation, integrity, excellence, compassion and wisdom.

We also go on learning journeys, and welcome volunteers from around the world, giving our children rich, diverse exposure, experiences and opportunities. Each child follows their own unique curriculum based on their strengths and needs. We’re not just focused on academics; we develop professional knowledge and professional competence in our children—helping them grow into confident, contributing members of society.
