In our project area, intense poverty, political violence, famine, drought, natural disasters, chronic endemic diseases and poor maternal health care, all are contributing in turning a large numbers of an Old Aged person into helpless  and destitute each year. There is generalized and pronounced lacking of health, nutrition, and caring services for indigenous  poor helpless and destitute Old aged persons interfering their physical, mental, social and spiritual development and well being, ultimately leading to a uncertain and frustrated life.  GVT identified the following underlying causes of the above situation in Vagra block of Bharuch district:  ¤ There is no residential facility for the poor helpless and destitute an old Aged person at the place where they can live under proper care to them in peaceful mind without any harassment for their life. ¤ There are no family member or care givers to these old aged people. They are alone in the family. The family or care givers of the poor helpless and destitute an Old aged person or an Old Aged person himself/herself cannot afford adequate foods for his/her proper nutrition. ¤ The poor helpless and destitute an Old Aged person do not get health care services and remain untreated and maltreated for many diseases. ¤ In many cases, the poor helpless and destitute old Aged persons are often deprived of proper care, tender love and participation in – social events and spiritual activities etc as being they were neglected. This project has been undertaken to address the above problem and its underlying causes. The project will ensure access of 250 helpless and destitute Old Aged persons in Bharuch district to nourishment, guidance, health service and other basic needs through establishment and operation of supply of monthly Nutrition Ration kits and medical services. 
 Specific area of needs to be addressed by the project is: ¤ Ration Kit for Foods:  There are no family member or care givers to these old aged people. They are alone in the family. The family or care givers of the poor helpless and destitute an Old aged person or an Old Aged person himself/herself cannot afford adequate foods for his/her proper nutrition. Because they could not work in the field, therefore, the poor helpless and destitute Old Aged persons who will need to be provided monthly ration food kits in free of cost.¤   Health Care facility: The poor helpless and destitute Old aged persons do not get health care services and remain untreated and maltreated for many diseases. Which is crucial for their age? Therefore, regular medical check-up, health care should be arranged for the targeted poor and helpless an Old Aged persons. 
 P1.     Adequate nourishment for the targeted the poor helpless and destitute an Old aged person will be ensured.  250 poor helpless an Old aged person will receive adequate nourishment and balanced diet every month. 2.     Access to instant and quality health care for the targeted poor helpless and destitute an Old Aged will be ensured and their awareness on health and hygienic issues will be increased.  The Old Aged person will receive regular medical checkup and health care services in fortnightly medical visits of a qualified physician. The Old Aged groups will gain instant and emergency health services from local physicians, health care providers and health centers.

Age Care Project ( Elderly Lives Matter)

According to a research, over 80% of women in India do not use sanitary napkins. Sanitary napkins are generally unavailable in rural areas of the country and if available, they are too expensive for rural households to afford. Therefore, women resort to age-old alternatives like cloth, ashes, and husk sand during menstruation. These substitutes are not only extremely uncomfortable but also the cause of various diseases and infections, some of which have lifelong effects.Unhygienic menstrual practices can affect the health of the girls/women and there is an increased vulnerability to reproductive tract infections and pelvic inflammatory diseases and other complications.The issue of menstrual hygiene is inadequately acknowledged and has not received proper attention. Good hygienic practices, such as use of sanitary pads and adequate washing of the genital areas, are essential during menstruation period. Women and girls of reproductive age need access to clean and soft absorbent sanitary products which in the long run protect their health from various infections. To this effect, the practice of good menstrual hygiene reduces the incidence of reproductive tract infection (RTI). Every year approximately 10 % of women worldwide are exposed to genital infections including urinary tract infections and bacterial vaginosis.As there are lots of myth and taboo associate with menstruation and also due to lack of education, rural women are not aware of the consequence of unhealthy sanitation nor are they keen to discuss about menstruation related problem in the open.Rural female will almost never ask a male shopkeeper for a packet of sanitary napkin. Even in the urban area, females are also hesitant to purchase napkins.Lack of accessibility and awareness are two common factors which further hinder the usage of napkin. Affordability is another issue in rural India where there is a constant fight for survival; usages of sanitary napkin become a want more than need.  
 Women from rural area are not using sanitary napkins due lack of awareness, non availability at village level, high cost of marketed napkins and also shame to buy it from male shop keeper when available. To overcome these all reason and to make women and girls to use sanitary pad for better menstrual hygiene, Desai foundation start Asani sanitary napkin- for women by women program. In Asani program, high quality low cost sanitary napkin prepared by a group of women and also sale by women at faliya level. This makes sanitary napkins both accessible and affordable to women by women in this region and also eliminate the shame involve during purchase from male shopkeeper. Simultaneously this program encourage women empowerment and to dream beyond.With the help of SHG members, ASHA worker, local leader or any other NGO’s and cooperate partners can be utilised to create awareness among adolescent girls and women about the importance of hygienic sanitation practices. We also discussed and explain the truth behind every myth and taboo. We encourage them to use clean napkins regularly and dispose of used ones properly. We also promote basic practices like washing hands after using the toilet.

ASANI SANITARY NAPKIN PROJECT - For Women By Women

Corona-virus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) was first detected in China in late 2019, then spreading to over 210 countries/territories by July 2020 (MOHFW, 2020). As per World Health Organization (WHO), by 23rd July 2020, 4:00 PM CEST, a total of 1.56 million confirmed cases and 6, 36,459 deaths have occurred worldwide (WHO, 2020).India’s 31 States/Union Territories have also been affected with the challenges of coronavirus infection as well as nation-wide lock down. Current proposal seeks to address these challenges for the most vulnerable people in Bharuch district of Gujarat State.During the Covid-19 epidemic, the whole country was locked down. All the people were in captivity at their homes in order to be safe but there were some people who lived in rural villages working of daily wages for livelihood and employment. These people were at home at the time of lockdown. These daily wages laborers were stuck in their houses, these laborers had neither money nor food. 
 <ul><li>Identification of trained Individuals from the community for mask preparation.</li><li>Opportunities will be provided to those who want to learn, they will have to stitch masks with their own fabric to check quality of their work. Selected ones will be assigned the job of cutting while most will be stitching.</li><li>Identification of vendors for supply of fabric, threads and plastic sheets and packets.</li><li>Check for standardization of all the masks produced - pictorial depiction of the manufacturing process, size of cut fabric and sizes of individual components of the face mask will be shared with all associated individuals to ensure uniformity.</li><li>Staff members and vocational trainees of GVT will be assigned to ensure effective monitoring and implementation of the production process as well as distribution of mask in the communities.</li></ul>We have activated over 120 women in rural communities making 2-ply hand-sewn masks through our Masks of HOPE (Health, Opportunity, Perseverance &amp; Empowerment) initiative. We have already made over 40000 masks, and we are committed to make 50,000 per month going forward, to freely distribute to the most underserved in Bharuch in Gujarat. The main objective of the project is to enhancing employability by providing a platform to the rural women who are already trained in sewing to make two layered pleat mask &amp; freely distribute to orient and make aware children and communities on Covid-19 and its preventive measures. The focus is to mitigate the risk factors related to Covid-19 transmission. 
 <ul><li>To enable 50 underprivileged Families capable for employability by providing a platform to earn 4-5 rupees per mask stitched.</li><li>To Orient and make aware children and communities on Covid-19 and its preventive measures in 20 villages.</li><li>The project aims to bring positive changes in the livelihood practices of local communities through promotion of groups.</li><li>The behavioural and attitudinal changes brought in by the project among the women will empower them to actively participate in decision making processes at the community level.</li><li>The groups will continue to access resources from financial and government agencies through the linkages created under the project.</li></ul>

In children under the age of 5, malnutrition is one of the biggest killers. The pandemic has threatened India's food security landscape across all four indicators: availability, access, stability, and utilization of resources. This further intensifies the existing problem of malnutrition that is deeply interlinked with poor access to nutritious foods and poor hygiene. Through this project, Gram Vikas Trust aims to support 1264 severely underweight children from Bharuch with supplementary nutrition and healthcare services for early detection and treatment of stunting. A contribution of ₹1,000 will provide one month's worth of nutrition ration kits for one child.The pandemic has affected children under the age of 5 years through food shortage, resulting in malnourishment and poor hygiene. Gram Vikas Trust is seeking support to provide 1264 severely underweight children from Bharuch with supplementary nutrition and healthcare services for early detection and treatment of stunting. One-third of the world’s ‘wasted’ children live in India, and this is rampant in rural areas, especially among scheduled tribes.The pandemic has threatened India's food security landscape across all four indicators: availability, access, stability, and utilization of resources. It could in-turn further intensify the existing problem of malnutrition among women and children.People often adopt coping mechanisms such as purchasing less food, substituting wholesome food with less nutritious alternatives, and decreasing the number of meals eaten on a day-to-day basis to deal with the crisis and with reduced incomes. A reduction in financial security risks increasing gaps in intra-household distribution of resources, which could further negatively impact women in the household. Further, women account for 81% of the country's workforce employed in the informal sector. The pandemic also impacts their access to steady jobs and salaries.The disruption of food supply chains, labour shortages, limited production, and restricted mobility also have a direct bearing on pregnant women's food and nutrition consumption. For instance, a shortage of fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, etc could potentially compromise nutrient supply to pregnant women and new mothers. This in turn accelerates undernutrition and lowers immunity in the midst of a pandemic, making them more prone to infections and diseases.COVID-19 has also substantially affected the network of government-run health and development centres, popularly known as Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). These centres are responsible for providing food and primary healthcare, among other things, to children below six years of age, and mothers---especially those from low-income-families---through anganwadi workers. 
 <ol><li>Screening of children for basic health issues with focus on nutritional deficiency in association with ICDS and Health staff</li><li>Providing nutritious preparation as a supplement to Severely Underweight children.</li><li>Imparting guidance to the key stakeholders for providing better healthcare and nutrition services to children as per the need on government services</li><li>Creating linkages with healthcare system for providing appropriate referral services for children as and when required</li><li>Engaging with families to National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS) for availing financial support to get affordable healthcare</li><li>Linking NHM and ICDS Programmes for children and adolescents to various schemes like deworming, iron supplementation, WASH, etc.</li><li>Conducting interactive sessions and educational activities to increase awareness on health and nutrition</li><li>Preparing a cadre of peer leaders, who are sensitive to the problems of children.</li><li>Building capacities of frontline health functionaries to deal with various health and nutrition problems of children with special focus on nutrition</li><li>Linking the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres (NRCs) with the families of severely malnourished children, as and when required</li><li>Quarterly review meeting for keeping track on convergence among key departments and intervention</li><li>Advocacy meetings for promoting the convergence at district and state level</li></ol>
