“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. Guria is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting child prostitution, second generation prostitution, trafficking of women, and forced labour or sex on children, primarily in Northern India.Our aim is to have a world free of these vices by freeing the women and their children from brothels. We aim to achieve this by ending their dependency on the criminal nexus involving drugs, sexual exploitation, mafias, police, politicians, and, above all, the impunity enjoyed by all those criminally involved.Guria’s approach is focused on rescue and legal intervention. Our strategy involves support ageing victims of sex trafficking and forced prostitution as well as adolescents so that they themselves do not become victims.Advocating for improvements in government policy and law enforcement rules related to trafficking and prostitution is another major activity of Guria. We don't only provide justice to survivors, but also work to support them and rehabilitate them.Guria was started in the year 1993 by Ajeet Singh. When the authorities failed the family of Sneha (name changed), Guria was called in to intervene. One day when Sneha was attending the school her hard working parents pour dreams into, she was abducted. Though the police initally refused to help, consistent pressure was applied and they finally filed an FIR 4 days after the incident. But even then no efforts were made to arrest the accused and the situation seemed hopeless. But Guria came in and ensured all legal avenues were pursued. We escalated the matter to the higher authorities and forced the conviction of the accused. A raid resulted in the capture of the abductor and Sneha's rescue. Furthermore, we enforced sentencing by advocating the rejection of the accused's bail. Finally, Sneha's family could get the justice they deserved. In India, a culture of victim-blaming and shame has insulated the authorities from the harsh realities of life on the streets. Take the case of poor Neetu (name changed), an underprivileged girl living on the outskirts of Mau, Uttar Pradesh. Her whole life changed when one day she went out simply to use the toilet before being abducted and brutally raped for hours by some hooligans. They even tried to silence her after the ordeal but Neetu was strong enough to survive. After nearby villagers informed the family, the approached the authorities to file legal proceedings only to be met with a wall of ineptitude and contempt. The authorities were unwilling to arrest the accused and did the bare minimum to pursue the case. Disillusioned with the corruption at play, Neetu's family sought Guria's help; a decision that would give them the justice they deserved. Guria used pressure tactics of approaching the higher authorities and relentlessly following up on any proceedings. Your support has truly made a remarkable difference, and we're thrilled to share some heartwarming insights from the visit. 🙌😊 Field Visit Date: 18/12/2023Field Visit by: Akanksha Singh, Give.do team Visit Summary:We first visited Guria's office in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, where the team briefed us on their operations. Following that, we had an extensive discussion with Ajeet Singh, Guria's founder, covering everything from the organization's inception to its current growth, dedicated to rescuing girls in need and breaking societal barriers. While in office, we also we also met six teenage beneficiaries whose lives had been transformed by Guria's efforts—they are now aspiring to pursue education and achieve their dreams. Later, we spoke with the project team and extended team members about their challenging yet determined approach to rescuing children and girls in difficult circumstances. They also shared their experience of times when rescue operations faced difficulties due to limited resources, time constraints, intervention of cops, etc., but their commitment to each rescue remained unwavering. After each rescue, Guria ensured that the beneficiary is safe, away from trauma, and learning better in life. They always kept a check on them. We also learned about the threats and challenges Guria encounters, including instances of attacks and difficulties in obtaining testimonies from beneficiaries due to external pressures. It was interesting to see a small courtroom in the office to prepare beneficiaries for their court proceedings.&nbsp; We also interacted with the legal team, who highlighted the challenges faced while supporting the victims within their circumstances. Ensuring the safety of beneficiaries and helping them understand the law and testimonies is paramount; empowering them to stay resilient throughout the process is crucial. Guria offer therapy sessions and music classes, to create a space safe for these young girls and women. Later in the evening, we visited Guria's center in Varanasi's main red-light area where beneficiaries and their children also come. We observed the children receiving a comprehensive array of offerings - including education, extracurricular classes, games, vocational training, and other avenues to nurture their talents. Every day, the children received meals and followed a set routine. The center was well-secured with a locked main gate, and a Guria team member visited daily. Annu, the center's caretaker, remained a constant presence, always there to ensure the children's safety and well-being. The center has a capacity of 300 children. It was intriguing to see these children with such amazing optimism and talent! According to a 2016 estimate by the Global Slavery Index, there are 45.8 million individuals involved in some form of modern slavery. Out of these, more than 18 million (highest in the world) people are living in conditions of modern slavery in India. Globally, human trafficking is the second largest and the fastest growing criminal industry in the world (Polaris Project). As per Guria’s PIL in the Honourable Supreme Court, almost 12 lakh minors are still captives in the sex industry throughout the country. According to the ILO Report 2014, human trafficking earns profits of roughly $150 billion a year for traffickers and $99 billion of that is from commercial sexual exploitation. 75% to 77% victims enter the sex trade through trafficking (Report: Girls and women in prostitution in India, supported by Department of Women and Child Development, Govt. of India). The US TIP Report 2012 states that only 0.15% (i.e.,1 in every 700) victims are ever identified in the cases of human trafficking. The US TIP report 2018 says that according to NCRB report, 7570 victims of sex trafficking were identified in 2016 in India. Corruption is endemic and there is limited rule of law. The above statistics show the extremity of the situation. It demands a reversal of power balance and long term sustainable impactful changes in favour of the most vulnerable, marginalized social groups of victims of sex trafficking/ rape with dignity. 
 Pioneered in the year 1993 by Ajeet Singh, Guria, a 36 member NGO in India, works towards fighting the sexual exploitation of women and children, especially through forced prostitution and sex trafficking which further leads to more severe and complex issues because of sex tourism and spreading of HIV/AIDS. The blue print of the foundation was laid out way back in 1988 when Mr. Singh adopted three children of a woman from a red light area. The milestone is astonishing as Mr. Singh was only 17 years of age. Guria has fulfilled the absence of an organisation in India that works towards sex trafficking and forced prostitution of women and children since its inception. Guria's multi pronged approach covers the following points in its efforts to combat the epidemic of sex trafficking:1.	Legal Intervention2.	Rescue3.  Through its 25 years of operation, Guria has achieved many milestones in its work of rescue, rehabilitation and advocacy. The team has rescues over 2500 persons from slavery, including the victims of commercial sexual exploitation and bonded labour. Guria has built up a 42,000 people strong rural women’s organization to prevent human trafficking in high risk areas. Guria currently supports the education and vocational training of about 5400 children, of which presently 460 have been admitted to formal schools. Total children supported till now is about 6800. Post rescue, through the rehabilitation program,154 children have adopted alternative ways of earning their livelihoods outside the red-light areas. Taking about innovation and equality, Guria has created India’s first ever cultural group of 30 women in prostitution who perform traditional music and dance as a means of rehabilitation and awareness. It also generates an income for these performers. They have performed in prestigious venues across India. Apart from these, some prominent legal achievements of Guria include:•	Achieved a landmark judgment by the Hon’ble Supreme court against bail for human traffickers.•	Two landmark judgments by Hon’ble Supreme Court rejecting bails of 14 very prominent human traffickers.•	Set a precedent through the Supreme Court rejecting fake custodies of rescued victims.•	Prevented reopening of 61 seized brothels at Allahabad through the Hon’ble High Court.•	Created the first sustainable child prostitution free red-light area.•	Unprecedented Judgment - Superintendent of Government Protection Home (Agra) is sentenced for life imprisonment for re-trafficking 57 rescued girls: the first case of life imprisonment both under section 370 (7) IPC and 16/17 POCO Act.•	Legal interventions in 2887 criminal cases against human traffickers, over 700 bail rejections achieved and total 70 brothels worth crores of rupees have been seized by the administration.•	As an extension of the criminal cases, Guria has filed a total of 15 Public Interest Litigations (PILs) in the hon’ble Supreme Court and hon’ble High Court to combat human trafficking.
