Vaani Deaf Children’s Foundation(Vaani) is working to enable children with hearing disabilities to live a life of dignity and respect. It aims to conn Read moreect specially-abled children with their families and their surroundings. It strives to address the issues of hearing-challenged children not being educated and such parents who are not informed about how to bring them up or about Government welfare schemes. Vaani set out to bring communication into the lives of hearing-impaired children by conducting awareness programmes, skill development and workshops highlighting the needs of specially abled children. Its efforts have led to the Foundation being conferred with many recognitions.

VAANI has impacted 88,950 direct and indirect beneficiaries, comprising 15250 deaf children, 24,400 parents, 10,300 professionals and 39000 general public.

Programs

  • Community Worker Training Programme

    The Foundation conducts special training for Anganwadi and Asha workers on how to handle hearing-impaired children. They are also equipped with the knowledge and techniques to counsel parents of such children and guide them towards relevant services and treatments.

  • Education Programme

    Vaani has developed a six-set training module focusing on the problems of deafness and techniques for teaching them. The modules are useful for parents, teachers of regular schools, special educators and community workers who deal with the identification and education of hearing-impaired children.

    It encourages the identification and training of hearing-impaired children to be started at an early age, otherwise leading to issues of understanding, making training a difficult task later on.

  • Haath Se Baat Kar Programme

    This programme seeks to engage with IT companies, CSR arms of various organisations and the general public to teach them sign language. It attempts to create a more inclusive society where the hearing-impaired person can be understood and be communicated to, using sign language.

  • Early Intervention-Parent Infant Programme

    Upon detection of hearing impairment in a child, it becomes the parent's responsibility to understand the child’s special needs and provide an enabling environment. To this end, Vaani initiated the Parent Infant Programme which is a home-based, family-centred, parent-guided, child-specific and natural approach to learning.

    Professionals work with the families as a team assisting them through the child’s growing up process. The programme enables parents to connect to other parents resulting in support and interaction, which in turn leads to the child’s development of language, literacy skills and growth in world awareness, positive self-esteem and personal responsibility.

  • Youth Transition And Skill Building

    The program aims at exploring the interests and potentials of Children with Hearing Impairment in the age group of 8 to 18 years and providing the opportunities and equipping them with the skills that would pave a way for pursuing further education and acquiring advance skills for employment, thus making them contribute in the economic activities of the mainstream society.

  • Project Muskan- Educational Intervention For Children With Hearing Impairment

    The Programme focuses on a Centre based approach with educational intervention services, reaching out directly to 200 Children With Hearing Impairment ( CWHI) and their families. Every child registered in the Sadhan Centre is assessed on various parameters like Communication Skills, Pre reading , reading , pre maths ,maths ,writing and social behaviour; based on which Annual Individualised Educational Plans(IEPS) are made and the sessions are taken forward on an individual basis by interventionists (Teachers of the Deaf). The Sessions are in order to develop a positive attitude towards the child’s disability and to learn the communication skills for a better bonding between the child and the parent. Through these sessions parents are also provided inputs on how they can support their children for developing communication and language in a home environment. The Team (interventionists) at the Centre will continue to be capacitated to upgrade their skills and keep their motivation alive to focus in enhancing the skills of the Children With Hearing Impairment . Community mobilisers will ensure the attendance of the children in Sadhan Centres. They will also visit schools to track the improvement of the child in his/her school. This will all be captured and recorded in a robust Management Information System which will track the development of the child.

  • New Born Hearing Screening

    The Program focuses on the Early identification & screening of hearing loss in newborns - a very important area which is missing in the Indian scenario. Delay in identification increases the difficulty of language development and comprehension, as the critical early three years are lost where the brain is most flexible of grasping anything and everything around it. Moreover due to lack of stimulus during these three crucial years, it leads to delayed reflexes from the child and has negative impact also on other developments. As an immediate need to focus on this issue , VAANI has set up Early identification screening centres in hospitals, equipped with Sohum , which is a low cost non-invasive hearing screening device for newborns ( Department of Biotechnology_Sohum Device ) and further linking the identified babies to Early Intervention Programmes existing in the respective locations.

Theory of Change

According to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) 3,4 and 10, VAANI believes in access to quality education, reduced inequalities, and good health & well being for the empowerment of our hearing-impaired children. VAANI wants to pursue this, as per SDG’s goal 17, through partnerships with stakeholders such as parents, medical professionals, local organisations, government, community workers, mainstream teachers, and other NGOs working in the disability field. Also moving forward, the real change and impact can only happen if we link our programs with already existing welfare plans and schemes within the governments, be it Central or State. They have the means and reach. Hence working in partnership with their welfare map seems to be the logical way forward if we want sustained and far-reaching changes.

Sustainable positive change and impact can occur only when we work in collaboration with partners who are aligned to the issue of deafness, ensuring a wider reach.

Empowered parents are in a better position to engage with their Hearing Impaired children and become community leaders who can motivate other parents.

VAANI believes in providing social and emotional support, in addition to technical support. A hearing-impaired child and their family go through a lot of emotional trauma, which needs to be recognized.

In the past 16 years of our work, we have
• Reached 19,510 Children With Hearing Impairment
• Imparted support through 2,13,416 Individualised Educational Training Sessions
• Screened 14,000 New Born Babies for Hearing Loss
• Reached 22,704 parents of Children With Hearing Impairment through training workshops and counselling sessions
• Reached 11,757 Professionals through Training workshops and
• Reached 40,319 General Public through Awareness & Sensitisation Programmes

We have achieved our milestones by
• Using the combined approach to develop communication skills and language for the CWHI
• Working in partnerships with government networks & agencies of the Education , Health and Welfare departments like the Samagra Shiksha Abhyan & National Health Mission and also with other Community Based Organisations like the Red Cross , Shathashrungha , Shirdhi Sai Sewa Trust, Pandua Pratibandhi Kalyan Samiti and Dakhin Kamrup Bodhir Vidyalay
• Working together with parents and building local parent Champions to become the voices of their children in the community
• Implementing technology based interventions as and when required and possible. During the pandemic, sessions were conducted virtually using Google Meet . Besides, the Voice to Visualisation Tool , the Resonate Learning App were some teaching learning Tools that were used to combat the challenges during pandemic times
• Using our mobile van , we have also managed to reach some of the unreached Hearing Impaired population in the rural areas of Karnataka

Some of the challenges we face are
• Inability of parents to bring their Children regularly for the sessions due to their poor economic conditions and lack of time
• COVID did pose a challenge as families did not have a smart phone and we were not able to reach all children. But in a few days this was handles by providing them with appropriate technological intervention and training.
