A significant number of disadvantaged Indian children face inadequate care and education, resulting in deficits in various areas. This leads to low le Read morearning levels and premature school dropouts, contributing to a large population of illiterate and unskilled youth under 25. CLR is dedicated to addressing these challenges by improving the development and education quality for socio-economically disadvantaged children and youth. They provide comprehensive technical support, including program design, capacity-building, training, action-research, and educational materials in areas such as parent/caregiver education, early childhood care, foundational literacy and numeracy, and English instruction in government regional medium schools and beyond. CLR's approach is informed by experiential learning through pilot projects and feedback from trainers, anganwadi workers, and teachers, ensuring effective support.

Programs

  • Early childhood care and development (Birth-3 years)

In the 1990s, CLR embarked on a mission to provide comprehensive support for enhancing early childcare. CLR assists parents and caregivers of infants and toddlers under three years old in creating nurturing home and community environments that foster warm and stimulating interactions with their young children. In disadvantaged rural and urban communities, CLR offers guidance through sessions led by well-trained community-based communicators and ICDS anganwadi workers. These sessions educate families about the vital roles of mothers, fathers, grandparents, and other caregivers in laying the crucial foundations for holistic infant and toddler development. It integrates key messages about prenatal and early child health, nutrition, social/emotional well-being, and child protection, with a strong emphasis on responsive parenting and early psychosocial stimulation.

  • Early childhood care and education (3-6 years)

CLR offers comprehensive technical support for Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs, including:
    1. Continuous professional development for teacher trainers, integrating child development principles and early learning theories into ECE practice. This support spans all levels of a training cascade to reach a wide array of anganwadi workers and pre-primary teachers.
    2. Providing audio-visual training materials in various Indian languages, including print modules, videos, and digital components.
    3. Designing developmentally appropriate ECE curriculum tailored to diverse local contexts, emphasizing activity-based and experiential pedagogy that encourages children's initiative, interaction, and problem-solving.
    4. Supplying cost-effective ECCE kits containing playful teaching and learning materials, accompanied by a user-friendly guidebook for anganwadi workers and teachers.
    5. Offering mentoring support to ground-level workers and teachers.

  • Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN)

CLR extends technical support to both school-based and out-of-school programs, encompassing the following initiatives:
    1. Continuous professional development for teacher trainers, resource persons, teachers, and NGO support teachers, integrating a theoretical understanding of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) with practical teaching skills and approaches. This includes reviewing and assessing learner progress while adhering to state curriculum and evaluation policies.
    2. Supplying supporting materials for teachers, such as manuals, print modules, and assessment cards.
    3. Offering a School Readiness package designed for pre-primary schools or new entrants in Class 1.
    4. Providing suitable and relevant teaching-learning materials for language and mathematics, along with guidance for creating a conducive school environment for FLN.
    5. Guiding the development of teacher-prepared materials that relate to the socio-cultural and natural environment of children.
