Sant Ishwar Foundation is managed by Army veterans. The trust has set up homes housed in a specially designed seven storey’s building to house orphan, Read more abandoned and vulnerable girls in need of care and protection and women with locomotive disabilities under one roof. The name of the institution is Ghar. Ghar embraces orphan, abandoned and vulnerable girls in need of care and protection and strives to empower every girl and disabled woman under her care through quality education, skilling and progressive development with values of humanity, empathy and goodness and facilitates their growth into compassionate, conscientious and productive human beings who will impact society in times to come. Ghar also houses a home for senior citizens on a self-sustainable basis. Ghar is the creation of a joint family of three generations - daughters, mothers and grandparents and their bonding as we have in our own families. Ghar is about belongingness, security, good education, a sound future and care and affection. We create meaningful, purposeful and fulfilling lives for our orphan, abandoned and vulnerable girls for them to learn how to use that to impact and make a difference in the lives of others in times to come. The trust also supports the education of marginalized non-resident children and conducts awareness campaigns and workshops on child protection and aspects of humanity.
Issue
According to UNICEF, India is home to approximately 31 million orphan children. The UN defines ‘orphan’ as a child who has lost one or both parents. However, many children without parental care have been abandoned by a living parent or parents. Street children include abandoned and neglected children with few/no family ties. There are over 2 million children living on the streets in India. Orphans, abandoned and marginalised children are often subject to systematic deprivation and face immense challenges - lack of belongingness, psychological issues, malnutrition, lack of education and access to healthcare, insecurity and a bleak future. They are in a continual struggle to fulfil their basic needs and are often easy prey to exploitation and abuse. The COVID pandemic has also taken a heavy toll on children with many of them having lost both their parents. Such children are often among the high risk, insecure and deprived groups who are denied not only their rights as children but also their childhood. Without guidance, education and security, they head for an obscure future. They need support to steer them back to the mainstream of social life through proper education opportunities, care and rehabilitation. There is thus a need to take care of such children and to provide them a sense of belongingness, security, education and access to healthcare, care and support for their overall development. Disabled people constitute 2.21% (26.8 million) of India’s population (2011 Census Report). Females constitute 11.8 million (44%) of this population. 8.3% (20.78 million) of total households have disabled members. Loco motor disabilities make up 20% of all disabled people. Maharashtra is home to 11.05% of all disabled people in the country and 2.64% of its own population. Disabled persons and their families incur substantial expenditure for facilitating activities of daily living, medical care, transportation, assistive devices etc. Many disabled people belong to poor families and have limited means to sustain themselves. They face immense challenges, lifelong medical issues, insecurity and a lack of skilling and job opportunities. There is thus a need to make them confident and productive members of society and to mainstream them
Action
Ghar provides a secure and nurturing environment for girls in need of care and protection, those without homes and family ties and those who are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Ghar provides education, skill training and counselling to those under her wings and does what it takes to make them grow into well informed and responsible humans, empowers them and mainstreams them in society as productive and law abiding citizens. Ghar provides good amenities, healthy nutrition, healthcare, quality education and recreational facilities, good hygiene and sanitation and protection against abuse and exploitation. Except for a few elder girls, all other girls are studying in good English medium schools including Army Public School, St Joseph’s Convent School etc. The girls are also imparted extensive in-house tuitions in all subjects and computers by a team of eight tuition teachers. It is envisaged that due to a strong foundation of good education and values, our girls will impact society in a positive manner with the message of humanity and empathy and give back to society in times to come. Ghar is a home of warmth, encouragement and learning where children dream and reach for the stars; the quintessence of happiness and aspirations, of hope and a sound future; of opportunities to realise one’s potential.
