Foster and Forge Foundation seeks to transform the lives of millions of school children by bolstering their education with the relevant life skills to Read more succeed in school and beyond. We do this by working with the government school teachers in collaboration with the government and partner organisations to foster positive learning environments. Founded by Meghna Chawla in 2015, Foster & Forge Foundation is a non-profit, Section 8 company. We are currently working closely with 3 local governments, on strategically chosen demonstration sites. Over the years, we have impacted over 3500 teachers and more than lac and a half children across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh by 2022. With strategic clarity in the academic year 2023, we have moved to a cost-efficient, high touch point model of demo-sites in zones of our intervention, as well as, we have expanded to neighbouring states of Haryana and Uttarakhand. Foster and Forge (FNF) is part of a larger movement in education to supplement foundational literacy and numeracy by enabling teachers to equip students with the life-skills and mindsets needed to succeed in life. The fellowship design for government school teachers helps them learn the Design thinking approach with the teaching tool FLUX (Copyrighted by FNF) and practices that encourage children to discover their own strengths, build empathy and become problem solvers. Mentoring support enables these teachers to become catalysts of change in their school system and their communities. By becoming a trusted partner of the local government and working closely with all stakeholders in the school education delivery value chain, i.e., state officials, district and block level officials, schools and parents, Foster and Forge hopes to inculcate FLUX design approaches across teaching in the school and integrate it into the everyday syllabus and curriculum plan at the state level.

Issue

The vast, almost un-measurable gap between education and learning in the government school system. More than 200 million children are enrolled in the government school system, but they do not get equipped with life skills like contextual problem-solving and experience education in a rote method. A huge mass of children begins life with the unfortunate assumption that their life path is unalterable and alternate dreams have no place in that predestined future. 12% to 13 % of school students in India suffer from emotional, behavioural, and learning problems such as anxiety, depression, learning difficulties, and suicidal tendencies, among others. Foundational learning needs to be supplemented with Life Skills: Students strive in the system and still find their education inadequate. 13 out of every 100 students do not continue education at secondary level and beyond because they do not find it relevant or meaningful (NSSO). Much of UP’s youth, being the largest young state, does not find education meaningful enough to continue.

Action

By becoming a trusted partner of the local government and working closely with all stakeholders in the school education delivery value chain, i.e., state officials, district and block level officials, schools and parents, Foster and Forge hopes to inculcate the skills of empathy, collaboration and problem solving in the classroom teaching and learning with experiential pedagogy, and integrate it into the everyday implementation at the state level.
