-An NGO set up in 2002 and registered with the District Registrar, Vellore in 2004. - Registered with Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi under FCR Read more Act. - Approved for exemption under Sec 80G of Income Tax Act for donations and also exempted from tax payment under Sec 12AA of the Act. - All regulatory / local body requirements strictly complied with. Our Activities: Most of our activities are in Tirupattur district covering the following areas: 1. Hostel: Run a Hostel in Mullai village (Vaniyambadi taluk) for 120 students, both boys and girls. The children are mostly tribals from Tirupattur and Tiruvannmalai districts. The children are admitted in the nearby government schools from Class 1 to Class 12. All facilities including recreational and sports are provided to the children. 2. Education: - Our staff visit 130 Anganwadis and 24 Primary schools to supplement the staff in teaching children. - Conduct Science, Maths Quiz in government schools to kindle childrens’ interest. Also show videos on subjects related to Science including Astronomy etc in government schools. - Provide teachers in government High Schools where there is need to teach English, Maths, Science and Computers. - Provide computers to government schools. - We also support higher education of poor children particularly girls with special emphasis on professional courses like Nursing etc,. 3.Health & Hygiene: - Work with 8 PHCs to assist the staff in counselling pregnant mothers on various issues, visit villages to guide the people on general hygiene and to dispel certain beliefs on health particularly relating to women. Special counselling for adolescent girls in schools on issues related to their health and hygiene. - Actively participate in Health Camps conducted by the Government Medical Teams. - Construction of toilets in government schools. - Provision of medical equipments to government PHCs

Programs

  • Hostel for poor children

    Running a hostel for poor children, from Class 1 to 12 mostly tribal with all facilities. Children stay in the hostel and go to nearby govenment schools. These are children who would otherwise be schools-drop outs either because lack of access to schools in their villages or migration of parents to cities for employment.
    The hostel has separate buildings for boys and girls, a proper kitchen and all amenities. Senior children are provided with cycles to commute to the school while the younger one are dropped in a motor vehicle.

  • Education

    While running the hostel is the flagship programme in the area of Education SODEWS is actively involved in working for improvement of education in various schools.
    - SODEWS sends its staff to 130 government Anganwadis and 24 government Primary schools, where they supplement the staff in imparting basic learning skills to the children. This work was taken up because of our belief that a strong foundation in the initial stage itself will help the kids perform better as they go to higher classes.
    - To create a scientific temperament in children SODEWS visits various government schools to conduct Quiz in Science & Maths. We also conduct Science exhibitions in schools where we encourage children to display their works.
    SODEWS has also been supplying Laboratory kits to needy government schools. Similarly Computers are provided to many schools and in a few case teaching support is also provided for Computers.
    - SODEWS has taken up 4 government schools for creation of proper structure, better teaching facilities, Computer education etc., to make them like "Model Schools".

  • Health

    - SODEWS sends its staff to 8 government Primary Health Centres / hospitals to suppliment the staff there who are overburdened. Special attention is paid to talking and counselling expecting mothers on various issues relating to their as well as the child's health.
    -SODEWS staff visit various schools and engage with adolescent girls on issues relating to puberty and various myths on menstruation etc., In addition the staff also visit villages and talk to the villagers on hygiene, child-marriage etc., and counsel them suitably.
    - SODEWS has been providing infrastructural facilities in various government hospitals in the district and also medical equipment to a few hospitals.
