Barefoot Edu Foundation is a non-profit organisation founded by a Harvard graduate, Young India Fellow and Teach For India Fellow, committed to transf Read moreorming schools into stimulating learning environments, contextualized for under-resourced communities. We do this by building the leadership capacity of principals, teachers, and students so that their voices, values, and goals shape education at the grassroots. With our support, they lead change and rapidly improve education and their school as a whole.

Issue

Indian schools are FAILING children from socio-economically disadvantaged communities. Ample evidence points that students from marginalized communities perform worse academically than the privileged in 80% Indian states (NAS 2021). This situation is further complicated economically with poverty being the strongest indicator leading to low learning levels in India. (Alcott and Rose 2017). Battling with multiple layers of discrimination (ethnicity, caste, class etc), these children often end up forced into jobs such as menial labor. The problem we aim to address is that Indian schools are failing more than 87 million socio-economically disadvantaged students.

Action

At Barefoot, we build a movement of leaders who create meaningful education for the 21st century & lead ACE schools i.e., those that excel in Academics, Co-curricular, and Edupreneurship! We do this through three programs: 1) Rehnuma (directly with budget schools): An incubator for school principals who push the boundaries of quality education through an entrepreneurial and empathetic approach to school leadership. Through Rehnuma, we have worked with 15 principals have started 15 disruptive projects to lead their self, school, and system effectively. Impact: 100% of our school leaders shared that they will recommend Rehnuma to other principals. 75% school leaders reported an increase in confidence to lead their schools after participating in Rehnuma. Reach: 35 principals from 6 cities in India 2) RehnumaX (building the ecosystem): An initiative that certifies educators to become School Coaches who work with school principals to launch micro-innovation projects. Educators serve as catalysts for school transformation using the principles of coaching. Impact: Educators (fellows) were enabled to become friends, coaches and guides to school principals. 89% fellows found the coach curriculum training to be highly effective. RehnumaX enabled 30 principals to launch micro-improvement projects Reach: 17 Teach For India Fellows coaching 30 school principals from Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Mumbai 3) Rehnuma4Gov (partnering with governments): Focuses on capacity building, equipping principals with the necessary skills and mindset to drive meaningful change in their schools. Through the program, best practices that are contextual to India and created by principals at the grassroots level will be identified and documented. These practices, rooted in the local context, will serve as valuable resources for other principals and educators across the country. Impact: 1.5 lacs+ school leaders trained in Uttar Pradesh in collaboration with Mantra4Change. Established a partnership with NCERT in collaboration with ShikshaLokam to strategize and implement the festival of micro-innovations, Vidya Amrit Mahotsav 2022. Reach: Uttar Pradesh (SLDP - School Leadership Development Program) in collaboration with Mantra4Change. Impact

We were invited by Shikshalokam to collaborate with NCERT to co-orchestrate Vidya Amrit Mahotsav–a national festival to generate and celebrate best practices tested by Indian educators. We were able to trigger half a million best practices & innovations by educators across India in 3 months. Furthermore, we have published our first book on Best Practices on School Leadership - Edupreneurs of the Future. This book features innovations by our school principals, educators, and student leaders. 100% of our school leaders recommend our programs. So far, we have coached 177+ principals directly through coaching, workshops, and peer learning circles. The impact of our work has reached 2 lac+ stakeholders through our government partnerships and the support of partner NGOs.

Programs

  • Rehnuma

A national survey found no leadership-focused training completed in 10 states. Indian school leaders' skills are lower than peers in 7 countries.

One single person can drive school improvement significantly more than others—the school principal & increases student learning by 30%. School Principals in India lack access to professional development and contextual resources, leading to ineffective school management. We coach principals to become effective CEOs and Entrepreneurs so that they can use limited resources more effectively and improve both education and their school as a whole. This is done through fortnightly coaching, monthly webinars, and bimonthly peer-learning circles. A Rehnuma Coach guides Principals to apply workshop learnings to school transformation projects of their choice using their local knowledge and skill sets.

  • RehnumaX

School leaders are brimming with ideas on how to improve their schools, however, are unable to devote time to focus on these ideas due to the many challenges they face on a daily basis.

RehnumaX is an approach to School Leader Professional Development. It aims to leverage stakeholders working with school leaders in various capacities to train to be catalysts for school transformation using the principles of coaching.

    Here:
    - School Leaders are HeadMasters and HeadMistresses, Principals, Vice-Principals, etc. who participate in decision-making for schools
    - Stakeholders working with school leaders are State-appointed resource persons (BMs, CRPs, etc.), Fellows placed as assistant school leaders or teachers in schools temporarily, etc.
    - School transformation is the process of improving school-wide practices toward students’ learning and development outcomes.
Coaching is a prolonged engagement between two professionals to work towards the coachee’s goals with guidance from the coach.

  • Rehnuma4Gov

Through Rehnuma4Gov, we focus on capacity building, equipping principals with the necessary skills and mindset to drive meaningful change in their schools. Through the program, best practices that are contextual to India and created by principals at the grassroots level will be identified and documented. These practices, rooted in the local context, will serve as valuable resources for other principals and educators across the country.

In 2022, we began working with the Uttar Pradesh government in partnership with Mantra4Change in order to achieve the goals of the Nipun Bharat mission. We are working with SCERT, Himachal Pradesh to improve student leadership in the school. We have also partnered with Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and Raebareli to build FLN through school leadership.

By 2025, we aim to impact 3 lakh+ education leaders through state and NGO partnerships.
