Every child can learn   At Perkins India, we enable the uniqueness of children with disabilities. We recognize our contribution towards sustainable Read moreand inclusive growth, guided by SDGs –   Goal 3 Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages Goal 4 Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all Goal 10 Reduce inequality within and among countries Goal 17 Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development We co-create our journey with healthcare partners, inclusive schools, intervention centres, frontline community workers and caregivers, assistive device partners, donors and many more stakeholders.     Perkins India brings learning  and intervention support to children with disabilities from marginalized communities. Children from these communities, especially those with complex disabilities, are likely to be left out due to inaccessibility to healthcare and education, and lack of awareness. Our team of trainers and resource persons which include teachers, trainers and foot soldiers like ASHA and Anganwadi workers, collaborate with the local communities and healthcare centres to identify children with disabilities, assess their needs, and bring them into the Perkins system. We meet and teach the children keeping their comfort foremost – be it at their homes, in intervention centres or inclusive schools. We engage responsibly and participate wholeheartedly. We continually invest in our teachers through capacity building.     Perkins India recognises that children  with disabilities can learn and thrive. The path to education begins with the right start in life and access to learning.   Perkins India is making this happen.   ·     We meet children where they are. ·     We begin early. ·     We assess, equip and get them up to speed.   ·     Check out our stories and case studies ·     View our gallery of picture narratives ·     Support our work ·     Spread the word

Programs

  • Identification

Perkins India looks for kids with vision impairment and various impairments (MDVI). In addition to having a vision impairment, children with MDVI may also have at least one other disability, such as a cognitive, developmental, hearing, or mobility problem. All of these kids are capable of learning, even though they might not see their environment the same as someone with normal eyesight or speak differently from other kids.

  • Intervention

The goal of intervention for kids with various disabilities and visual impairments is to get over early obstacles to inclusion and learning. Important initial actions include making sure the child obtains a medical disability certificate from the government and allowing the child and family to use government programmes for people with disabilities. After that, families receive help in acquiring devices and assistive aids, such as wheelchairs or spectacles, for kids who can use them to enter a learning environment more easily.

At this point, intervention services—like therapeutic intervention—are essential for the kid to acquire the foundational knowledge and abilities needed to take part in educational opportunities. Due to the compounding effect of numerous disabilities, children need specialised instructional interventions and environment adaptations to make sense of their surroundings.
