The traditional watershed systems such as 'Ahars', 'Pynes', and 'Pokhars' have long served as the backbone of agriculture, particularly in the drought-prone region of South Bihar. However, their depletion and the widespread misuse and exploitation of the rain-fed rivers in this area have significantly contributed to water scarcity in agriculture and the continuous decline of the water table. In response, the 'Ahar Pyne Bachao Abhiyan' initiative has emerged as a grassroots movement led by civil society to educate the public about the importance of these traditional watershed structures in promoting sustainable agriculture. It aims to unite various stakeholders for the restoration and revitalization of these structures.
