JL Rohatgi Memorial Eye Hospital (JL Rohatgi Hospital) is the largest and the oldest eye hospital, and training institute for ophthalmology in the Kan Read morepur region. The eye hospital was established as a unit of the Association for the Prevention of Blindness, Uttar Pradesh (UP), which was founded in Kanpur in 1946 with the mission to eradicate avoidable blindness in UP. Subsequently, an eye hospital was established in 1959 under the name of Kanpur Eye Hospital, which was later renamed Dr Jawahar Lal Rohatgi Memorial Eye Hospital. At present, the hospital's innovative eye care delivery system is recognized as a model for other developing eye hospitals. All patients are accorded the same care and high-quality service, regardless of their economic status, as a result of a unique fee system and effective management. The Hospital, which has the distinction of being a productive eye care organization, in terms of surgical volume and the number of patients treated, follow the principle that large volume combined with a high-quality service results in low cost and self-sustainability. With a vision, ‘To become state-of-the-art facility in providing affordable, accessible, equitable, and cutting-edge comprehensive healthcare services , the hospital is driven by its mission to provide quality healthcare services to the community with a special focus on women, children, and elderly. J L Rohatgi Hospital, a multi-speciality hospital has been serving the community since 1997 and strives to provide the highest quality of eye care services. Over the years, the hospital has continuously improved and provided affordable eye care services to all. The hospital’s biggest achievement has been the high number of appropriately treated and satisfied patients since the day of its inception. The institute has been conducting eye camps in Kanpur and surrounding districts for the last 60 years. It operates around 20,000 cases every year, out of which, 17,000 are free. The hospital provides complete facilities for the management of eye diseases. Apart from the regular eye out-patient department (OPD) where comprehensive eye examination is undertaken, the hospital also has a general wing. The general wing of the hospital has specialities of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Otorhinolaryngology, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Physiotherapy. Quality and patient safety are core pillars of the hospital. Programs

  • Community Eye Health Program

Initiated in 2014, the Community Eye Health Program (CEHP) delivers comprehensive outpatient services to approximately 1 million people across seven adjacent districts (Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Auraiya, Unnao, Fatehpur, Kannauj, and Etawah) through eight satellite centers. The program's objective is to eliminate avoidable blindness in villages, and to date, 24 villages have been declared avoidable blindness-free. The project is backed by Operation Eyesight Universal (OEU) Canada, LV Prasad Eye Institute, SEVA Foundation, and Rotary India and Rotary International.

  • Community based Health check-up

Community-based health check-up camps serve as awareness and screening events aimed at raising community awareness and detecting common non-communicable diseases. These include conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, refractive errors, diabetic retinopathy, diabetes, hypertension, orthopaedic issues, ENT problems, deafness, and dental disorders, all provided free of cost. This initiative is made possible through the support of prominent corporate social responsibility partners such as GAIL India, CUGL, GAIL Gas, in collaboration with the National Youth Foundation, Lucknow.

  • Eicher Driver Care Program

In partnership with Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, New Delhi, the hospital introduced Eicher eye and ear screening mobile vans to deliver advanced and cost-effective healthcare services to truck drivers. Recognizing the importance of clear vision and good hearing abilities in preventing road traffic accidents, the initiative targets major transport hubs in the Kanpur region. Through satellite centers, outreach camps, and a mobile ophthalmic van model (Eicher eye and ear screening mobile van), truck drivers undergo screening, receive on-the-spot spectacle provision, and are referred for further treatment at the hospital.

  • Rural Eye Relief Camp

The Rural Eye Relief Camp is one of the hospital's most enduring and extensive projects, serving the rural communities of Kanpur and neighbouring districts. The community outreach team conducts screenings for cataracts and refractive errors among the rural population. Identified cataract cases are then referred to JL Rohatgi Hospital for necessary eye surgery. Supported by the government and generous donations from philanthropic organizations, this project has successfully conducted over 300,000 eye surgeries through more than 4,000 eye relief camps since its inception in 1946.
