  • Since

    1962

Caritas India, founded in 1962, operates as the official development arm of the Catholic Churches in India. It's part of the larger Caritas Confederat Read moreion, a global network with over 160 member organisations in nearly 200 countries, making it one of the world's largest humanitarian networks. Rooted in Gospel principles of love and compassion and guided by a commitment to human rights and social justice, Caritas India focuses on alleviating human suffering. It recognizes the interconnectedness of poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights, where the lack of rights can both cause and result from poverty. Caritas India has been agile in addressing emerging social challenges at the international and national levels by collaborating with researchers, advocates, and policymakers. Driven by a mission to uphold human dignity, Caritas India has diligently served marginalized communities, including the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes, and religious minorities, through preferential actions for the most marginalized. With a broad range of development initiatives across India, Caritas India is renowned for its work in poverty alleviation, especially in Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction and Natural Resource Management. While its origins lie in disaster response during the Bangladesh Refugee crisis in 1971, Caritas India has evolved over five decades to engage in various areas, including livelihood security, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, good governance, anti-human trafficking, peace-building, and healthcare, with a focus on diseases like HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis, and other communicable diseases. Over the past five decades, Caritas India has played a significant role in nation-building by supporting thousands of projects and organisations, contributing to social progress and empowerment while emphasizing a rights-based approach.
