Very Special Arts India (VSAI), established in 1986, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to uplifting economically marginalized children and youth Read morewith disabilities in India. VSAI's core mission is to empower these individuals by providing a blend of social, educational, and vocational rehabilitation services. VSAI's primary objective is to nurture the innate abilities and talents of differently-abled individuals, fostering skill development, self-esteem, and their seamless integration into mainstream society. It employs various creative mediums such as dance, drama, music, visual arts, and crafts as therapeutic tools and offers vocational training to promote self-reliance. In recent times, it has also successfully introduced computer education to bridge the digital divide. VSAI encourages active participation in activities like Special Olympics, computer skills training, market visits, cultural outings, and more, aiming to help marginalized individuals become productive and contributing members of society. Notably, many of VSAI's trained youth have gone on to establish their own successful businesses, secured gainful employment, or remained with the organisation. It's important to highlight that VSAI provides all its services free of charge, relying heavily on donations from individuals and groups. The organisation greatly values the contributions of volunteers, both from India and abroad, who generously dedicate their time, skills, and expertise to support its programmes, demonstrating a strong commitment to its mission.

  • Functional Education Programme

    In addition to a wide array of enrichment activities, VSA India offers Functional Education to children and youth who may not fit into the mainstream school system and require supported learning environments. This programme imparts essential literacy, numeracy, and survival skills like reading road signs and managing money. Many of the students served by VSA come from shelter homes and nearby slums. The teaching approach incorporates dance, music, theatre, art, and yoga, creating a holistic educational experience. Furthermore, the programme exposes students to practical skills such as cooking, paper bag painting, diya painting, weaving, and jewellery making, offering potential vocational paths. VSA customizes the learning experience, providing daily sessions, weekly attendance, and tailor-made programmes to meet the individual needs, skills, and interests of the students.

  • Computer Project

    In 2008, VSA India launched its Computer Project to introduce differently-abled children to computer technology, preparing them for potential careers in the field. Recognizing its success, it expanded the computer lab with a generous donation, now serving 150 children and youth. It offers four three-month modules, graded for progression and leading to a certificate. The lab is recognized by the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT), boosting job opportunities for graduates. Many students have secured employment based on their computer skills acquired through these courses.

  • Vocational Programme

    In its Vocational Programme, VSAI focuses on equipping differently-abled children, youth, and economically vulnerable adults, particularly women, with income-generating skills. This essential initiative includes training in weaving, tailoring, beautician skills, candle making, and block printing. Over time, participants become proficient in these skills, enabling them to generate income. To ensure comprehensive development, VSAI combines vocational training with functional literacy classes, which not only enhance vocational expertise but also instil important life skills like punctuality, diligence, and responsibility. All these valuable services are provided free of charge, and many of its trainees have gone on to become master trainers or assistant teachers, now earning income from the skills they acquired.

  • Kala Sangam Programme

    Since April 2010, VSA India has been conducting "Kala Sangam," a programme aimed at less privileged children between the ages of 10 and 18. Held every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Kala Sangam offers classes in Indian classical dance, Western dance, theatre, instrumental music, and vocal music. Each child can choose two activities from this array. The programme's goal is to cultivate hidden talents and potential in these children, providing them with a platform to display their skills. Notably, students of Kala Sangam have had the opportunity to showcase their talents at various events.
