To provide a holistic “safety net” of services to street children within an environment that is conducive to optimum development and to integrate them into mainstream society. Salaam Baalak is an organization that respects and supports the rights of children and believes in offering choices.

Shelter Homes and Rehabilitation Programme
The Trust operates many shelters throughout the city of Mumbai that are situated in Andheri, Malad, Kandivali, Chowpatty and also the city of Solapur. The shelters not only provide a residence to homeless children but takes care of their education, food, mental rehabilitation, encourages their creativity, ensures their nutritional needs are met, trains them in employable skills, engages them in extra-curricular activities, provides medical care and counsels them when required.

Milestones & Track Record
Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT) has been operating for more than 3 decades, making a positive difference to thousands of street children who would otherwise have fallen prey to the evils of life on the street. The Trust currently runs projects covering an entire range from night shelters, day care centers, balwadis, a vocational “careers” project, to a project for the “Pardhi” children which community is notorious for begging. SBT has been the only NGO to find success with the Pardhi children. It provides programmes for health and nutrition, education, social development, life skills, cognitive development, creative development, and vocational training. SBT also partners with Childline India Foundation to run the Childline project at Thane and Railway Childline at Bandra and Thane railway stations. SBT is also associated with CDK- Child Development Khazana, to inculcate the habit of savings, financial prudence and responsibility.
The challenges are many – relating to the operations and to the children. Funding, finding and maintaining appropriate premises for day/ night shelters, finding the right staff, dealing with various organisations. Handling children of various age groups and backgrounds, different languages, children who have never been to school before, who are not used to sitting still, who have no concept of discipline, hygiene, studies, etc.
SBT has been able to bring such children into the mainstream by enrolling them in the formal school/ college system and helping them with their studies, providing opportunities for holistic development through arts, craft, sports and other extra curricular activities. As they grow older then vocational training, career guidance and job opportunities so that they can become independent and off the street.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
We have been associated with Salaam Baalak Trust since 2017. Since this time, we have found that the Trust has been doing an excellent job in getting the children off the street and on their feet. At any given time, they are looking after approximately 800 children in their centres.
As we are a private Foundation, which doesn’t take money from outside, we are very careful where we spend our money. We love seeing the transformations of the students for whom we pay for their higher learning/vocational training. The successful students themselves nurture the younger ones and, by example, give them the courage and confidence to do better in life and attain jobs which otherwise would have seemed impossible for a street child.
In addition, we are proud to be able to sponsor other areas such as eye camps, as often the students don’t realise that the reason they have learning difficulties is because they need glasses.
We are very proud to partner with them and bring a transformative change in the lives of so many marginalised children. Keep up the good work Salaam Baalak.

Thyssenkrupp partners with Salaam Balaak to further childhood learning for the marginalized children living on the streets of Mumbai. We work closely with SBT to reach various vocational learning programs and aids that make learning fun and inclusive.
Salaam Baalak comes with a clear sense of purpose for what they do. It is clearly not easy to bring the children together, create a sense of awareness, and then sustain that motivation in the young minds of the future.

We were awarded “Best NGO” in the Small NGO category by the Resource Alliance in 2010 as well as the Ahilyabai Holkar Award from the Maharashtra Government for grass roots service to society. SBTM was also selected as the Regional Finalist for 2011 in the “Volunteer involving NGO of the Year” category at the Apeejay India Volunteer Awards 2011.
