Its mission is to empower women in low-income, climate-threatened communities by promoting inclusive and sustainable community development. SSP achieves this by repositioning women's collectives as farmers and entrepreneurs, enhancing their economic and social resilience. Over the past two decades, it has nurtured a movement of grassroots women leaders who perceive opportunities within challenges. Through transformative models in sectors like climate-resilient agriculture, health, and water and sanitation, it has made a significant impact on India's underserved communities. With its core partnership approach, it facilitates access to resources, training, and opportunities, empowering rural women to become problem solvers, innovators, and leaders, creating positive change in their households, communities, and local economies. To date, SSP's efforts have benefited over 6 million people, empowering more than 300,000 women in farming communities.

Programs

  • Women's Entrepreneurship Programme

    This programme empowers women through entrepreneurship training and access to seed funding and business expansion loans via microfinance institutions. It facilitates rural marketing and identifies opportunities in health, clean energy, and sanitation. The initiative fosters a network of grassroots entrepreneurs, helping women recognize themselves as entrepreneurs. It establishes an entrepreneurship education course and women-led Resource Center, positively impacting rural villages in Maharashtra and Bihar.

  • Water, Sanitation, Health & Nutrition Programme

    Swayam Shikshan Prayog (SSP) empowers women in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra to become Arogya Sakhis—community health service providers and entrepreneurs. It uses modern technology to deliver preventive healthcare services, increasing awareness and generating income. This initiative builds women's leadership in decentralized climate risk governance, benefiting families and promoting access to water, sanitation, and nutrition products. Improved access to nutritious food and water security positively impact vulnerable households in climate-threatened regions. SSP also facilitates Government linkages, health camps, and business support for women-led agriculture enterprises.

  • Energy And Environment Programme

    Swayam Shikshan Prayog's Women’s Entrepreneurship in Clean Energy programme connects rural communities with clean energy solutions through women entrepreneurs known as Sakhis. This public-private partnership model integrates women into the clean energy technology supply chain, providing access to technology, finance, and markets. The Sakhi network facilitates the delivery of clean energy products like cookstoves and solar lamps to rural households. The programme also promotes public awareness, establishes clean energy hubs, and fosters partnerships for product design and marketing. Additionally, the programme expands into health, hygiene, and climate adaptive solutions, sustaining the Sakhi network's impact.

  • Women-Led Climate Resilient Farming

    The Women-led Climate Resilient Farming (WCRF) model empowers women as farmers, leaders, and change agents, promoting food-secure practices. It focuses on Market Linkages, Federating Women Farmers, Technology Integration, and Water efficient micro irrigation. This model enhances productivity, income, health, nutrition, and resilience. With a supportive ecosystem of partners, it enables women with farm literacy, decision-making abilities, land access, and leadership skills. Recognized with the United Nations Development Program's Equator Prize 2017, this model empowers women farmers to combat climate change, develop enterprises, and stimulate local economies.
