Vikash, established in 1986, has become a leading Non-Government Organization in Odisha, working towards achieving sustainability in Developmental Pur Read moresuits and Protection of Right of people. Vikash believes that development can take place with the communities' own efforts and that Vikash only needs to facilitate the process. It believes in the strength and power of the people - the toughest task is only to make the community realize and explore their own strengths. With an innovative approach to development, Vikash tries hard to help people to help themselves without imposing any development programmes on them. In the process, Vikash intends to strengthen and support community structures and local institutions. Vikash believes in human initiative, strength and innovativeness, rather than on charity. Vikash believes "small is beautiful" but at the same time we realize that small things can perish without making much contribution to the whole. Like streams coming together to form a river, the growth of great civilizations come from a network of small initiatives - their overall joint effort realizing more significance. Here at Vikash, we have designed our line of action to work in large areas while maintaining the beauty and sanctity of small things. With a strong determination to serve the people in need, Vikash spreads its activities in 14 districts of the State. Theory of Change

Introduction:
Vikash was established in 1986 by a group of Social Workers led by the founder Secretary Mr. Ashok Nanda.
One day in a hot summer season during his (Ashok Nanda) post graduation days, he was standing under the shed of a building. He saw a person throwing coins to a deformed leprosy patient moving on a cart. The man without fingers struggled a lot to pick up the coins from the black top road which was almost melting. The Disabled leprosy patient finally slept on the road and picked up the coins with his lip. Mr. Ashok Nanda was deeply affected by this exposure. On that day he had decided to do something for the leprosy patients. He started his social work as a student, organizing University students for social work. He started working for rehabilitation of the leprosy patients in the leprosy colonies exclusively in the state of Odisha. In the first part of 1980s he was involved in social movements of slum dwellers. Later, Vikash was established in 1986

Problem Statement:

Poverty is excluding People from access to fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution of India. Due to poverty, lack of awareness among citizens about their rights & entitlements, lack of infrastructure for health, education, housing, livelihood, lack of system in participating community decision making process, social injustice, disparities in the forms of gender, ability, caste; poor functioning of local self government structures, rights of people are not realized and unfulfilled. In spite of several initiatives by Government and Non-Government agencies, still people are left behind and excluded from their fundamental benefits.

 Vikash was a leader in promotion of women self help groups. It had successfully advocated for a Self Help Cooperative Act in Odisha for giving legal recognition to SHGs.
 In 1997, formed 28 SHGs federations in 5 districts of Odisha.
 6 villages of Gop block made free from open defecation in 1996.
