Udavum Karangal has been working to rehabilitate these sick people and reunite them with their families because she believes that everyone has the right to be treated with decency. If the psychiatric patients' family cannot be located or does not accept them, Udavum Karangal becomes their new permanent home. Patients who are chronic and dependent require love and acceptance in addition to medical care. They offer to help with cooking, cleaning, tending to the other patients, and other tasks to keep themselves busy.

In Chennai, there are three homes for psychiatric patients: Athma Shanthi and Karuna Illam for women; Dignity Home and Adaikalam for men; and Shakthi Vanam and Thanjam for men and women in Coimbatore. Mana Rehabilitation Centre for men and Sumaithangi for women are located in Thiruvannamalai. Shanthivanam, Madurai, is suitable for all genders.
