"It was dark inside, I was afraid the rocks would fall on me. And one day when I went in, a rock hit me and I got a huge cut on my leg.", says eight year old Varun*. Varun used to go to the Mica mines along with his parents to pick mica scraps. He would spend his entire day in the mines and visit these dark pits every day of the week. States of Bihar and Jharkhand in India produce 25% of the world's Mica. According to a report in 2018, in the Mica belt of these regions, approximately 10,394 children were reported to be out-of-school, with some engaged in Mica collection. Families of these children are extremely dependent on Mica collection for their livelihood and there are no additional means of earning a living.As the mica scrap collection is an unorganised sector, there is severe exploitation, leading to low wages. This plunges families into poverty and as a result, children are forced to work in the mines; collecting mica scraps from deep, dark pits in extremely hazardous conditions. 
 We address child labour in the Mica mines by working in 41 villages in 2 Mica dependent districts of Koderma and Giridih in Jharkhand. We work towards:<ul><li>Providing children with access to quality education - activity based learning, digital classes, mobile libraries </li><li>Providing children with study material, school supplies and bicycles</li><li>Providing additional means of livelihood to parents to build their economic capacity and reduce their mica dependence, organising them into self help groups to access a revolving fund - community led socio-economic development</li><li>Organising children into Children's Clubs where they are sensitised on child rights and encouraged to be agents of change in addressing problems of the children in their communities.</li><li>Providing families access to social welfare and social protection schemes of the Government </li><li>Sensiting communities on the ill effects of child labour and the importance of education, building capacities of child based institutions.</li></ul>

Women and young girls from socio-economically disadvantaged Devadasi communities are forced into prostitution as part of a cultural belief. The girls who are victims of the system witness abuse, violence and discrimination. Similar is the case of girls who although not victims, have seen their mothers go through insults and hardship. These experiences have disturbed the well-being of the children of Devadasis. They are filled with shame and fear which stops them from moving ahead in life. Many girls drop out of school, don't step out of homes, and live in their misery. Society doesn't help either. They are treated without respect and denied their rights. These factors keep the community socio-economically downtrodden. 
 Our project, Children GOOD (Getting Out of the Devadasi system) empowers children of Devadasis such that they break the shackles of oppression and maximise their potential. We have identified a major hindrance to the community's development to be the distraught mindset and societal attitude toward them.To address this, we plan to coach 2000 adolescent girl children of Devadasis (12-18 years) in 10 life skills such as confidence building, communication, resilience, leadership, self-belief and others such that they can mould themselves into stronger women. This strength will motivate them to move towards achieving their goals like higher education and getting jobs of their choice, among others.Apart from this, we plan to group the children in Children's Clubs (Kishori clubs) where apart from life skills we will teach them tools to bring about changes in their villages. This concept is called Child Led Research where the girls will learn advocacy, community mapping, photography, reporting and videography so that they will be able to document village-level problems to concerned officials and work for their redressal. 
 The life skills component will equip the girls to be stronger women and give them the courage to break their barriers. These sessions will encourage girls to study better, work harder and approach life with confidence and the belief they too are worthy and can achieve whatever they wish.The Child Led Research component will improve the way society sees children of Devadasis and their community. Once girls begin to take village-level issues into their hands and work to solve them, their surrounding society will respect and value them. They will even be grateful and extend support to the community.From 2019 to early 2022, we have empowered 2,764 girls in the two above components which have led to the continuation of their education with a section of them being the first secondary school graduates in their families. Girls have also opted for vocational skill training such as tailoring, driving and computer skills, moving towards financial freedom and security. Many girls also solved village-level problems such as drainage, sanitation, school construction, and road construction among others which has made life better for their fellow villagers."We are so proud of children of Devadasis", said a local panchayat officer.Since April 2022, we plan to empower 2000 more girls for which we need your support. The Devadasi system is a practice deeply rooted in Indian tradition, where women   from  a certain lower caste community are dedicated to perform sexual favours to men as part of their role in society. Girls are dedicated as Devadasis at a young adolescent age and face immense sexual and socio-economic exploitation. A survey conducted by the Karnataka State Women's University in 2017 revealed that there are 80,000 Devadasis in the Karnataka state. Children of Devadasis are also prone for child marriage and other forms of exploitation. In most of the cases they are deserted soon and fall prey for sexual abuses of the Devadasi tradition.  Devadasi women and their families have been badly affected due to Covid-19. The immediate relief support provided by the Government in terms of free ration and cash transfers support is inadequate to recover &amp; rebuild their livelihoods. Given the current status, it will be difficult for these women to survive with no or low income from sex work and this situation may force them to engage their children also into sex work for living.  
 Our initiative aims at empowering 100 Children of Devadasis in Bagalkot district in Karnataka by imparting them with life &amp; livelihood skills. We intend to provide or facilitate them with market driven skills through vocational and livelihood training in different skills or trades including tailoring, office assistants, beauty parlours, etc resulting in meaningful employment or self-employment.In addition, we plan to provide these children with comprehensive literacy and  life skills training to help them lead a dignified and decent life.Essentially therefore, our solution is an integrated livelihood and life skills training program which primarily endeavours to empower children of Devadasis and, by extension, their equally disadvantaged Devadasi mother and her family.

Change Lives of Children of Devadasis in Bagalkot (North Karnataka) through Life and Livelihood Skills

The Devadasi System which began as a form of worship, is now a religious sanction given to prostitution in lower caste Devadasi families. It is an institutional exploitation of young girls and women in the name of culture and tradition marred by those with vested interests. This system results in the socio-economical and sexual exploitation of young girls who are dedicated as Devadasis post their puberty. Children of Devadasis who are not yet dedicated as sex workers are also extremely vulnerable to abuse, discrimination and exploitation.The lower caste Devadasi community's poor socio-economic condition as a result of years of exploitation, becomes a reason for the young girl get into sex work to make ends meet. She is left without any choice. 
 To address the issue, Children of India has been instrumental in facilitating the project Getting Out of the Devadasi System or Children GOOD. As part of the project, girls below 18 from Devadasi families who are vulnerable to and victims of exploitation across five districts of North Karnataka (Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Ballari and Koppala) are identified and grouped into Kishori Clubs (Children's Clubs) where they are sensitised on child rights, child protection, advocacy, life skills, enrolled in schools and facilitated in continuation of schooling. Another major intervention of the project has been to provide Vocational Skill Training to 50 girls of which 12 girls now have been placed in steady well paying jobs.Seeing the success of this initiative, the project plans to scale up its interventions and provide Vocational Skill training to girls in courses where the skills are in demand in the labour market of the region.The following is the action planned<ol><li>Vocation Skill training support to 150 girls in Fashion Design and Tailoring to work in the thriving jeans stitching industry in North Karnataka</li><li>Vocational Skill training support to 150 girls in an Officer Manager's source where the girl is taught computer skills for office operations. This skill is also in high demand in North Karnataka with many offices requiring labour with good computer skills.</li></ol> 
 The following will be the impact of the intervention <ol><li>Alternate source of livelihood for Devadasi families resulting in the young girl not needing to get into sex work to provide for the family</li><li>Increase in the socio-economic status of the young girl and her family where they move towards a better life</li></ol>

In South Karnataka, Divya* was married at the tender age of 14 like many girls in her village. By 17, she was a mother of two. “I had children early because that’s what we do,” she said. In a village in North Karnataka, thirteen-year-old Saira* was married to a driver and faced family pressure to have children and look after the house. She shared "I felt weak and tired. I was scolded for my inability to do household chores"Unfortunately, these stories are not uncommon. Each year, nearly 1.5 million girls in India get married before the age of 18, 23% of which are in Karnataka. (Source: Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights)Once married, these girls face immense amounts of pressure to have children, which poses a significant threat to their health. In India, the risk of maternal death for early married girls (EMGs) is double that of older females. This risk also transfers to the child, who is 50% more likely to be born stillborn or die within the first weeks of life than a baby born to an older mother. (Source: Girls Not Brides) These risks are heightened due to pre-existing issues like anaemia, which is common among young girls in villages.*Names have been changed to protect identities. 
 Despite the large number of Early Married Adolescent Girls (EMGs) in Karnataka and India, and the serious health risks related to their pregnancies, few organisations work to support these girls after marriage. In the last two years, Children of India Foundation (CIF) worked with over 120 community based organizations across Karnataka to reach 3,077 vulnerable EMGs through the project “Initiatives for Married Adolescent Girls’ Empowerment (IMAGE),” which provided support for them in multiple areas from sexual health and gender-based violence to skill-based training and education. CIF plans to use these established networks to address the maternal health crisis among EMGs in districts of Bidar, Belagavi and Bagakot in Karnataka by;1. Providing nutritional supplements to 510 married adolescent pregnant and lactating girls 2. Conducting awareness sessions to 191 pregnant adolescent girls on nutritional food, adverse effect of anemia and safe delivery process with communication materials, videos, audios.3. Conducting awareness sessions to 319 lactating adolescent mothers on importance of breastfeeding, growth chart of baby and healthy &amp; nutritional food requirement for the mother and the baby. 
 Following will be the impact of the project1. Improved reproductive health status of 510 pregnant and lactating married adolescent girls2. Improved HB level and reduction of anemia of 510 pregnant and lactating married adolescent girls3. Ensured safe delivery with healthy baby of 191 pregnant married adolescent girls4. Improved health condition of 319 lactating mother and the baby5. Ensured breast feeding to 319 baby and improved healthy condition of the babyWith your support, Children of India Foundation can provide 510 adolescent mothers the nutrition and awareness they need for safe pregnancies and deliveries. Providing supplements will increase their haemoglobin levels and cure their anaemic condition, reducing the risk of health problems to them and their child. Awareness sessions on maternal health will provide a safe space for adolescent mothers to learn and address their queries on the daunting challenges of pregnancy and motherhood. As a result, they will be equipped them to improve their health status.

They also lack adequate awareness about managing the present wave, leading to panic and further risk of infection.

As per a survey by the Karnataka State Women's University in 2018, there are 80,000 Devadasis in North Karnataka alone, making the region extremely vulnerable for young girls from the community.The result of this is that the girl's education gets affected. She drops out of school either due to dedication induced by poverty/parental pressure or due to feelings of humiliation by peers at school. The incidence of post pubertal adolescent girls from Devadasi families is very high in the regions of North Karnataka. Once they drop out, the girls are even more at risk of getting back into the vicious cycle of sex work, abuse and exploitation. 
 Our project, Children Empowerment for Getting Out of the Devadasi System or Children GOOD, addresses exploitation in the Devadasi system prevalent in 5 districts of North Karnataka - Vijayapura, Belagavi, Ballari, Koppal and Bagalkot. We reach out to a total of around 2,600 girls by grouping them in Kishori Clubs, empowering them through tools of child participation and child empowerment.The project plans to scale up its interventions by providing education support to 500 of these girls (100 from each district - presently school going) who have been identified as high risk dropouts. Each girl will be provided with the following for one academic year :<ol><li>Support with tuition fee</li><li>School books and other study material</li><li>School Uniform</li><li>Life Skills training focussing on the importance of education for a good life</li></ol>Access to these resources will help retain the girls in school as it would not be strain on their economic capabilities. The life skills training through Kishori Clubs will give train the girls in confidence building, goal setting, resilience and ways to cope up with stress and anxiety, ultimately with them realising that continuing their education is key for a better life and a brighter future. 
 The impact created would be<ol><li>Reduction in dropout rates among school going girls from Devadasi families</li><li>Reduction in the risk of school going Devadasi girls being abused and sexually exploited</li><li>Belief, optimism, ambition and willingness in the girls to work towards a better life by completing their education. </li></ol>

Families dependent on Mica collection in Jharkhand, India live in abject poverty resulting in their children being engaged in labour and living in exploitative conditions.The COVID-19 outbreak has made their socio-economic conditions even worse, increasing their vulnerabilities. While the state records close to 300K active cases and 3K deaths, the Mica mining regions (Koderma and Giridih districts) are at high risk due to their remoteness, poor outreach of basic services/facilities, huge digital divide and lack of access to resources. Our project areas have reported 58 positive cases and 8 deaths as a result of the second wave of COVID. There is a high risk of infection due to reverse migration and lack of awareness about COVID appropriate behaviour. The ongoing lockdown has resulted in reduced income opportunities leading to food insecurity among the most vulnerable families. Children and families are finding it very difficult to survive due to loss of livelihoods as well as protect themselves from potential risk of infection. Heavy panic due to pandemic and anxiety has also affected the psychosocial well being of children. 
 We plan to reach out to 1,100 vulnerable families by<ol><li>Supplying them with dry ration (rice,dal, vegetables,cooking oil) and hygiene kits (face masks, sanitiser, hand wash, soaps, detergent)</li><li>Using audio/voice messages to spread awareness on COVID appropriate practices and uptake of vaccination.</li><li>Organising/Facilitating Vaccination camps </li><li>Support for sustained access to supplementary nutrition through home stead nutrition gardening.</li><li>Providing children with psychosocial support kits ( arts,drawing,painting and creative activities) to keep them joyfully engaged.</li></ol> 
 <ol><li>Children and families are protected from contracting the virus and associated health complications.</li><li>Vulnerable families have access to food for 14 days (to meet the expected time gap in rolling out of the Government food distribution scheme).</li><li>Increased level of awareness on COVID appropriate behaviour, hygiene, vaccination and health seeking behaviour.</li><li>Increased access and coverage of vaccination.</li><li>Families will have sustained access to supplementary nutrition and boost immunity through homestead nutrition gardens.</li><li>Children can address their anxiety issues through joyful engagement</li></ol>

Protect children living in COVID affected Mica mining areas

The issue here is the lack of education among married adolescent girls coupled with the lack of access to education during the Coronavirus pandemic.Nearly 1.5 million girls in India get married before the age of 18. The state of Karnataka accounts for 23% of India's child marriages. Poverty, illiteracy and lack of awarness are main reasons for child marriages.Early marriages take a toll on girls' education; their schooling is stopped and the girls get into a helpless, vulnerable situation. Due to non-accessibility to education, the girl's potential is never realised and she resigns to a confined life. Moreover, girls lack independent living and as a result, are victims of domestic abuse and other forms of violence.The girls can really be uplifted socially, economically and morally by facilitating schooling.The project in 2019 provided 133 girls access to formal schooling and 69 girls access to to write examinations as private candidates.However, with the pandemic and the closure of schools, the risk of dropouts coupled with resulting socio-economic issues is higher. The pandemic has cut down all their access to learning and the materials required for it.Therefore there is need to faciliate their access to digital education. 
 To address the issue, <ul><li>We have identified 100 married adolescent girls from classes 8 to 10 across 5 project districts in Karnataka ( Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapura, Belagavi, Bagalkot, Bidar) who require access to digital education as this is the age group with the highest risk of dropouts. </li><li>We plan to provide every 2 girls an E-tablet with preloaded educational content in Kannada aligning with the State Board syllabus for classes 8 to 10. The sharing of tablets between two girls makes way for cross learning, making the learning process more engaging and effective.</li><li>These tablets will be circulated among more married adolescent girls once these 100 complete their schooling, making the project sustainable.</li><li>The Project staff will also conduct online training sessions to instruct the girls on how to use the tablets. The staff will also conduct a follow up with the girls to address their queries. </li></ul> 
 <ul><li>Our immediate impact would be to facilitate access to learning for 100 married adolescent girls during the closure of the schools.</li><li>This access to learning reduces the risk of drop out rates among the girls, which is at risk of increasing during the pandemic.</li><li>It also keeps the girls' engaged and their dreams alive.</li><li>Access to education during the pandemic also reduces their time spent on domestic labour, reduces the risk of domestic violence and unwanted pregnancies. </li><li>Once schools reopen, these tablets will be used for additional learning, making way for girls to spend more time in their studies.</li><li>Education through technology will also increase their interest levels and keep them enthusiastic.</li></ul>

Provide victims of child marriage access to digital education

Digital education while has been one of the most adaptive model of remote learning during the pandemic, unfortunately children from villages across the states of Jharkhand, Karnataka and Telangana lack access to e-learning tools. Unfortunately, children in these rural areas lack access to digital equipment like E-tablets, mobile phones and digital education material to continue their studies, as parents can't afford to buy them. 
 We would like to provide children in our operational areas with digital equipment like E-tablets and mobile phones so that they can continue their education online. We will also provide children with pre-loaded audio-visual education material stored on memory cards which they can connect to their gadgets. The memory cards will be useful as some of the children stay in rural areas where internet access is an issue, so education material uploaded on memory cards would help them access study material. 
 We wish for children in rural areas to access their right to education and overcome barriers to learning during the pandemic. Through our project we aim to provide :50 E-tabs which will be used by 300 children50 mobile phones which will be used by 100 children100 memory cards which can be used to access content on both E-tabs and mobile phones

Devadasi system—it’s a tradition that goes back to the sixth century but was outlawed less than 50 years ago and continues to force young girls into sex work in modern-day India. Instead of being ‘dedicated’ to deities, young girls are subject to awful abuse in the name of an ancient practice.Even 'Devadasis' who work as sex workers and want their children never to be part of the system, are sometimes forced to "dedicate" girls because of poverty. The young girls who are Devadasi children often face stigma, and lack of support, and live in extreme poverty.Children of India Foundation firmly believes that this can be addressed through a focused education support initiative.
