The special-needs children also enjoy getting attention and affection from the elderly. Take the case of children like Rahul, who is hearing-impaired and mentally challenged. He receives nutritious food, counselling and medical care. After coming here he has started to speak on his own and interacts well with the other children. His life has been transformed. He also gets the care of the elderly, just like his grandparents used to do when they were around.“We came up with this unique idea to fight the loneliness of the elderly. And the children get grandparents. Impact Bimla's has had a hard life in the last 65 years. She was born and raised in Kamalpur village. At a young age, she married Nityananda. Her husband was a door to door clothes vendor in the village. **After 12 years of her marriage, her husband passed away.** Bimla then single-handedly had to take care of her seven daughters and one son. She faced a very tough time by herself coping with financial hardships. **She worked as a maid to manage the needs of her large family.** She worked hard and got her children married. **Unfortunately, after their marriage, all her children got busy with their lives, and no one supported Bimla.**She lived in a one-room mud wall house with one of her daughters who is a widow. Her daughter worked as a helper in a tailoring shop. Bimala suffers from severe asthma and hence found it very hard to find a job. **With no means of livelihood, she started to beg.** **Abhoy Mission's social workers spotted her and decided to include her in the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) beneficiary List. After the intervention of Abhoy Mission, things changed for the better.** She now receives rations every month. She also received medical help when required. She has been enabled to live a dignified life now, with the support of Abhoy Mission.**Without the support of Abhoy Mission, Bimla would have spent all her old age begging. Impact **Shova Kumari was deserted by her parents when she was just a day old because she was mentally challenged.** When no one came forward to care for her, the ' Child Welfare Committee' of Gomati district enrolled her in the Abhoy Mission home.**She was assessed and diagnosed with multiple disabilities. As she grew up, Shova remained dependent in all domains of ADL -Activities of daily living.**Activities of daily living (ADL) is a term used in healthcare to refer to people's daily self care activities. Common ADLs include feeding ourselves, bathing, dressing, grooming, cleaning oneself after defecating and leisure.She also had very poor social skills. She did not respond to any communication directed to her.With consistent care, nurturing, and training there was remarkable change in her. Slowly she started showing interest in her surroundings and to learn to take care of herself.**She can now eat her meals independently. She has started to speak a few words and small sentences to express herself.** This helps her establish communication and relationship with others. She enjoys singing and remembers the tunes of a few songs.She also involves herself in small chores at the home like watering plants,Her caregivers are hopeful that with time, she may grow up to one day be independent.**Children like Shova are abandoned because of their mental challenges. Field Visit Date: 16/02/2024Field Visit By: Atreyi Bhanja, associate Visit Summary:The following is an account of the Give team's highly informative visit to an Ashram where Abhoy personnel provide essential services and materials to the 20-25 beneficiaries residing there. The visit started with a conversation with the various aged persons regarding their material requirements and interactions with Abhoy staff at the distribution center of the Ashram. The beneficiaries were pleased to be at the Ashram and said they were provided with everything they needed. After a productive and fruitful conversation at the distribution center, we learned of the various services provided to beneficiaries such as nutrition, medicine, and therapy from the beneficiaries living at their Ashram. Abhoy beneficiaries live in a spacious residential campus with most teachers and staff on the ground, ready to deal with any issues straight away. Abhoy has started work on the 3rd floor of the main building with the funds allocated thus far. The funds raised so far through the campaign have been used efficiently as planned. Unfortunately, it has slowed recently due to a lack of funds to finish the job. Discussion with the NGO's finance team reveals transparent and efficient bookkeeping. Abhoy mission has managed to do incredible work in helping uplift the lives of the aged and mentally ill. Their beneficiaries are well taken care of, and their personnel are dedicated. The Give Team was honored to meet and discuss with the staff about their time working at Abhoy's ashram and how they manage their tough workload. The future looks bright for Abhoy and its wards. However, they need additional support to finish construction on the third floor of the main building and extend their reach even further. Help them achieve their dream and donate liberally now.

For some, home is all they have. The home of numerous abandoned elderly and special needs children needs fixing and it's up to you to help! Our generous donors have contributed greatly to giving these poor souls a new building to call home but Abhoy needs more. Abhoy Mission has completed the construction of the roof of the new building, which includes 26 columns. However, 34 more columns are required to finish the ramp construction. Without more funds, the task of providing new premises for their charges will be extremely difficult.
