But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. CHILD HEART FOUNDATION (CHF) is a registered charity founded in 2013 by a pediatric cardiologist and six heart warrior parents. We work with children born with heart disease from underprivileged families. The mission and vision of CHF is to save each child with heart disease irrespective of their financial, or economic background. All our programs are designed to provide end-to-end solutions for such children. We offer free services, which include <ul><li>Echocardiography screening, diagnosis (&gt; 15000 children screened) </li><li>Treatment for the diagnosed disease (295 children treated)</li><li>Fetal echo diagnosis to detect any cardiac abnormality in fetal heart (&gt; 7000 pregnant women screened)</li><li>Government partnership programs- Donation of echocardiography machines in Government hospitals and training of the resident pediatricians in echocardiography. Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is the most common congenital problem in children, accounting for nearly 25% of all congenital malformations. The prevalence of CHD in India is approximately 4 cases per 1000 live births. Early recognition of such diseases is of immense importance as clinical presentation and deterioration can lead to sudden collapse. Incidence and prevalence of CHD vary worldwide. In Asia, the estimated prevalence is 9.3/1000 live births while the estimated total CHD birth prevalence in Europe is significantly higher than in North America (8.2/1000 live births vs 6.9/100 live births). Keeping the fact that most of the congenital heart patients require treatment in the first year of their life, poor parents find it impossible to raise funds for treatment which can run into lakhs. 
 1. The high costs for diagnosis and treatment which is out of reach for poor parents. They end up losing their children as the waiting period at Government hospitals is too long. We provide free OPD consultation and echocardiography testing through our PraDAAN program for children belonging to underprivileged families, If they are diagnosed with any congenital heart disease, we enrol the children into our financial assistance program and raise funds and get them treated at the best hospital.2. Through our free fetal echocardiography diagnosis JEEVANSH program, we screen pregnant women for any fetal heart abnormalities.3.PH Life Care provides free medicine to children suffering from Pulmonary Hypertension, a life-threatening heart disease.4.SUGYAAN is our community awareness program. 6. Hridya Saksham is our echocardiography training program for paediatricians to train them for early screening.

The pandemic has had its worst impact on children from underprivileged families already suffering from health issues. Coronavirus has only increased the financial burden on such families. Child Heart Foundation is supporting children from underprivileged backgrounds born with heart diseases whose families have been financially impacted by COVID-19. The project aims to provide treatment to 20 underprivileged children in Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab and West Bengal.Covid-19 affected everyone in various ways, which included losing family members , losing jobs, livelihood and many more. We at Child Heart Foundation work with children born with heart diseases from underprivileged families.<ol><li>The fact that 180000 to 200000 children are born each year in India with a type of congenital heart disease and 30% of these children require treatment in first year of their life, poor and young parents who have got affected by Covid, and family find it impossible to organize treatment expenses which can run into lakhs. They end up losing their children as the waiting period at Government hospitals is too long.</li></ol>If we as an NGO and community as a whole do not intervene and support these children, the families who are already reeling under stress and desperation might lose their child. 
 During the second wave of COVID-19. We started a relief fund for helping children and women with medical supplies, ration and hospital care. This fund had an immense impact and we could reach out to more families, more than 5000 beneficiaries.<ol><li>Through CHF HRIDAAN™, We register the patient after final diagnosis and approximate estimated costs are worked out.</li><li>The registration process involves address proof, income certificate and identity proof documents of the parent/guardian to be certified by local government authorizing authority.</li><li>Through this project we will get 20 children treated for various heart diseases. These children belong to families which have been directly or indirectly affected by Covid pandemic</li></ol> 
 <ol><li>Direct Impact Saving lives of 20 children in the age group of 0 to 18 years by getting them treated for various heart defects. These children would otherwise not survive due to lack of funds.</li><li>The diagnosis of these heart defects will be offered through free echocardiography screening at our center.</li><li>Indirect beneficiaries will be 200 family members who are directly related to these children</li><li>Creating awareness in around 50000 community members regarding congenital heart diseases so that children get screened for any underlying heart disease and get treated as soon as possible.</li></ol>

Treatment Of Heart Diseases in Children From COVID-19  Affected Families

In India, we have 1 child born in every 100 live births with a Congenital Heart Defect. 180,000 to 200,000 children are born every year with CHD, only 15,000 get operated, rest either do not survive or are added to pool of waitlisted children.CHD is one of the main causes of infant and child mortalityIt is one of the most common birth defects. 
 This program includes fetal screening of women who are referred to us from gynecologists who feel suspicious about the fetal heart health. This also includes screening of women who have had a previous case of child with heart diseases. Families having a history of children with rare diseases and CHD. The objectives of the project are as follows1) To carry out fetal heart screening through fetal echocardiography so that any underlying cardiac malformations are diagnosed as early as possible2) This helps in counselling the parents in deciding how to take a decision on the future course for the unborn child 
 1) Early Diagnosis of any underlying fetal cardiac defect which helps the parents to plan accordingly.2) Decrease in the child mortality due to congenital heart disease3) Early planning for treatment of the child when born

JEEVANSH  - Fetal echocardiography screening of Pregnant Women for any fetal heart abnormality

Congenital Heart Disease is the most common birth defect, 1 child is born with a heart defect in every 100 live births in India. About 180000 to 200000 children are born in a year with this defect and only 15000 children get treated in a year, others die or are added to the already existing pool of waitlisted children.The lack of awareness, funds and hospitals are the major concern in our country. Majority of the hospitals are located in Southern part of India, we only have AIIMS and PGI with infrastructure for handling pediatric surgeries. None of the Government hospitals in and around Delhi has a pediatric cardiology ICU . The pediatric cardiac patients have to share the infrastructure and specialists with the adult cardiology. This leads to lot of complications in the post OP care.The cost of surgeries/ treatments in private hospitals is very high for a child from underprivileged family to afford. This leads to their losing their children and they become mute spectators to this and lead a life of guilt and tragedy for the whole family.The helpessness lasts for the life time especially for the parents. 
 We register these children who get diagnosed with any congenital heart defect into our CHF HRIDAAN program and offer financial assistance for the treatment of the child. It involves a documentation process where the parent ahs to submit the income certificate which has to be attested by the village/ area official at the DC office. The address proof, adhaar copies of both parent, birth certificate of the child, consent forms for waiting period risk etc are to be duly filled and signed. After the documentation is done, the fundraising from our side starts and as and when the fund get generated from CSR donors or individuals, the hospital and specilaist is identified and date for treatment id fixed, followed by the treatment.We offer free followups for the child after treatment.Through this project, we wish to get 10 children diagnosed with TETROLOGY OF FALLOT ( TOF) treated over a period of 6 months 
 We wish to get children with identified cardiac defects treated and grow up as healthy individuals and lead a normal life as any other normal child.We wish to help the family live with dignity and not lead a traumatic life if the child dies due to lack of funds and leaves the family guilty for rest of their lives.
