For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. Diya Ghar is an NGO with a heart for the migrant community. Long before India’s labourers became a news item because of the national lockdown, we were working to give this community to give them a leg up through the power of education. Diya Ghar started in 2016 with a vision for all children, irrespective of their economic status, to have access to stimulating and nurturing pre-school education. Our mission is to set up pre-schools and daycare centers for children of migrant workers (specifically those living in blue tent settlements) in the city of Bangalore, and expand to other cities in India eventually. Until March 2020, we ran 3 Preschool and Day Care centres serving 135 children. However due to the pandemic we had to bring an all new Community Model strategy that would help us continue working with migrant children and their families even through severe lockdowns. Our focus is preschool education, nutrition, healthcare and community development. We have impacted over 500 children and over 50 children have graduated and enrolled in Primary schools in the last 5-6 years. In just about a year, we have spread across 11 communities with over 600 children who attend daily classes at our community classrooms that we started building within migrant blue tent communities starting in 2020. Additionally, all the children within these communities, student or not, receive nutrition supplements from us on a daily basis, which includes eggs, milk, high protein mix, fruits and protein bars. We are now also working strongly to get every migrant in the communities vaccinated either through our corporate partnerships or with the help of the BBMP vaccination program. Poorer communities are the most vulnerable and the worst affected by Covid19. Hundreds within our communities had lost all their livelihoods during and lockdowns and for long periods of time thereafter too. For construction workers, knife sharpeners, hawkers and many other daily wagers, income generation came to a standstill. As daily wagers, no income meant there was no food. Their children is who we served since 2016 and when the pandemic put a ban on all schools our 3 schools were shut down too. Since then we have started going into the communities and teaching children in the open and when we have enough children we set up a community classroom within their community. These children are often malnourished and don't get a proper balanced diet. Health checkups for children are almost unknown. We have seen cases of children who are clearly suffering from jaundice and were being treated at home with remedies that are nothing but superstitious. 
 <ol><li>Early Childhood Education: We build classrooms within the community and identify and train community teachers.</li><li>Nutrition: We provide nutritional supplements (milk, eggs, fruit, protein bars, porridge mix) for the children in our preschool program and their siblings (All children). </li><li>Child Care: We provide clothes, slippers, blankets and hygiene kits for children.</li><li>Health Care: We conduct quarterly health camps and support children who need medical treatment.</li><li>Parent Empowerment: Through a curriculum of weekly video sessions we teach parenting skills and activities that they can do with their children. We follow up with calls and community visits.</li></ol> 
 <ol><li>Children who graduate from our program can easily join a primary school in Bangalore or their village.</li><li>We regularly check the growth of each child making sure that the nutrition we are providing is beneficial.</li><li>During winters they are kept warm with blankets and sweaters, and they get hygiene kits through the year. They get toys, footwear, clothes and other items children need.</li><li>Our health camps help hundreds of families get medical assistance and we provide treatment at no cost to children with special needs.</li><li>Parents are now more invested in their children's education than ever. They are better equipped to care for their children and understand their children better.</li></ol>

With massive development taking place in Indian cities, thousands of families migrate everyday from rural areas to urban hubs. These migrant labourers or construction workers form one of the most vulnerable, neglected populations in the country. They live in tarpaulin sheet homes and lack access to basic requirements like water and sanitation. The children of these workers are usually taken to the construction sites where older siblings shoulder the responsibility of the younger ones. In Bangalore alone, there are more than 400,000 underprivileged children under the age of six. In the absence of adult supervision, these children face neglect, at the least, to all kinds of abuse – physical, emotional and sexual. Construction dust, debris, heavy machinery in the area, and unguarded pits also pose a major health hazard for these young children.Additionally, while birth to six years is a crucial stage of a child's development, these children are not receiving any nurturing or education. As these children grow, they continue going to the construction sites and are at the risk of becoming child labourers. 
 Diya Ghar is an NGO for children from migrant communities. At Diya Ghar, we believe that every child deserves to experience the joy of learning. With this as our guiding philosophy, we run a Montessori pre-school in Bangalore, currently reaching out to 60 children from 4 communities, whose parents are construction workers.The children are picked up from their homes at 8:30 a.m. They have porridge and fruit in the morning, a hot nutritious meal in the afternoon, and milk and snacks in the evening. In the first part of the day, the children learn Mathematics, English and Kannada using various Montessori material. We follow the Montessori system of education since all concepts are learnt through the five senses and each child has the space to learn at their own pace. This helps us to cater to each child’s need and lay a strong foundation for future learning.In the afternoons they do art and craft, play with blocks and puzzles and enjoy singing and dancing. At 4:30 p.m., the children are transported back to their homes.We conduct regular meetings with parents to highlight various issues such as health, hygiene, education, child sexual abuse.Current Need: The parents of our children leave at 8:30 and come back around 6 pm from their construction site. They are not able to drop and pick up their children from school. The children can therefore come to school only if they are picked up from their homes. For the past two years, Diya Ghar has been renting a van and hiring a driver to transport children from the migrant settlements to school, and to drop them back home at the end of the school day. While this system has worked in the past, it is proving to be increasingly unreliable. In order to continue safe and reliable transport, we propose the purchase of our own vehicle. 
 In June 2018, six children enrolled in Class 1. We are preparing 15 children to join primary school in June 2019.Of the families that moved back to their village, about 75% of those children have been enrolled in government schools in their villages. In the 60 children (from 4 communities), who attend regularly we have seen:•	Dramatic improvement in physical health of each child•	Safe environment for the children and protection from abuse (physical, sexual, emotional)•	Improvement in communication skills and collaborative skills•	Parents and community have begun to value their children’s education

Fund a van to bring 60 migrant children to school in Bangalore

Just in Bangalore there are over 400,000 children under the age of 6 years who don’t have access to a safe preschool. They have never stepped foot inside a class room! They live in blue tent settlements with no access to clean water, sanitation or electricity. They accompany their parents to dangerous construction sites. Children are therefore exposed to physical, emotional and sexual abuse on construction sites. 
 Diya Ghar runs three Montessori preschools in Bangalore, currently reaching out to 135 children whose parents are construction workers. At Diya Ghar, each child is nurtured physically, emotionally, intellectually and socially. We are currently working on opening our fourth centre that will support 40 migrant children from vulnerable backgrounds. 
 In the last three years, we have impacted 330+ children who would have otherwise seen no Preschool education. 22 students who graduated have enrolled in primary schools. Our vision is to reach 1000 children through 10 preschool centres by end of 2020.
