Many children living in poverty will never transition out of this lifestyle due to a lack of opportunities available to them. Being born into a poor or uneducated family is no reason for a child to not have access to health care, education and proper nutrition; these are basic human rights.Unfortunately, this is what we see year after year in underprivileged areas of Thane.  Typically both parents work, so the older children are kept home from school in order to care for the younger ones. In other situations, the older children are taken out of school and put to work, to help provide for their families. This contributes to poor self-confidence, a lack of knowledge in foundational concepts, and malnutrition, which leads to health problems. All of these factors contribute to a high dropout rate in school. And once a child drops out, it’s very difficult to get them back into the system.So, although the government offers free education, many children are unschooled and illiterate because of their home situations. This results in lifestyles that are detrimental to their holistic development. The economic crisis generated by COVID-19 has only worsened these situations.India today is both competitive and fast-advancing. These children stand little to no chance of breaking out of the poverty cycle they were born into and becoming positive contributors to society; ultimately this limits the overall progression of India. 
 Our heart is to provide life-changing opportunities.HLC provides quality Early Childhood Education, Supplementary Education and Care at its Education Center in Thane. We cater to children between the ages of three to twelve and carry out our services in a spacious, well-ventilated area - providing a safe, clean, and healthy atmosphere for children to flourish in.We teach basic reading, comprehension, expression, and arithmetic to the children. These building blocks will enable the children to progress in school, complete their education successfully, attain higher education and secure profitable employment.We teach using play methodology, which makes learning fun for the children. Every day we provide hot meals and milk for the students at our Learning Center. We also arrange for medical checkups, take the children on excursions and host annual picnics. House visits are another important part of our program as they give us a better understanding of the children and their lives at home. We provide all these services so children can develop holistically and reach their full potential. 
 Change their destiny.Enrolled children will complete their studies, become properly employed and obtain jobs they are passionate about. They will feel like valuable members of society and will want to give back to the communities they are a part of, contributing to the overall development of India.Reduction in School Dropouts - LC’s teaching pedagogy ensures our students will be strong in their foundational literacy skills. We hope this will develop their love for learning and encourage them to stay in school. Increased Health and Sharpness of Students - Environment plays a massive role in the development of a child. Bringing the children out of their environments into a safe, spacious location does wonders for them. Both nutritious meals and engaging activities stimulate their brains, helping unlock their inherent potential. Improved Confidence and Manners in Enrolled Children - Our students are taught in an atmosphere of safety, acceptance and care. We impart good values are inspire personal significance within each child we work with. Increased Registrations - We re-iterate the importance of education during PTMs and help create awareness for education through our community visits.

Project Education

Hopelessness and despair hang over them like a wet blanket. According to a survey by the Thane Municipal Corporation published in November 2019, the city of Thane has nearly a million people residing in 252 slum communities.  Slum residents consistently face problems many of the population will never have to deal with. This includes limited access to water (not necessarily clean), dilapidated overcrowded homes, narrow alleyways littered with garbage, sewer and stagnant water creating unsanitary living conditions.  Due to working conditions, wage structures, social security and living conditions all being areas of concern, personal healthcare isn’t high on their list of priorities. Hence minor ailments become serious problems, treatments by resident quacks make matters worse, loans taken at high interest rates to pay off hospital bills lead to financial stress. Many here are emotionally drained too because of a lack of apathy by family members and society, and the stigma attached to certain diseases.  These pockets of poverty lead to poor quality of life as malnutrition and diseases continue to thrive here. There is just no escaping it. 
 The issue of healthcare in these areas is a large one however, even small solutions can make great differences. Our JA project provides: ·  Quality Care &amp; Treatments - Healthcare provided through home visits, follow-up with doctors, guidance on health-related issues, support for hospital admissions etc. ·  Free Assistance - Economic assistance, medical sponsorship, clothes and medical aid ·  Medical camps - Testing for diseases such as cancer, HIV, TB, minor ailments and Eye screening via reputable hospitals ·  Liaising with Government Primary Health Centers and Anganwadi Centres - Supporting their health and nutrition program ·  Awareness Sessions &amp; Community meetings - Educating people on current and pressing issues, misleading information related to health, hygiene, care and treatment, government benefit schemes, etc ·  Covid Care - Testing and Vaccination ·  Personal Support <ul><li>Linking individuals with relevant services, enabling them to access and utilize various benefits offered by the government or NGOs</li><li>Celebration of days</li></ul> 
 We aim to provide services to these communities that transition them from lifestyles of ‘surviving’ to ‘thriving.’ Our vision is to see individuals enjoying good health, improved lifestyles, and overall wellness through increasing awareness, offering services and providing care and support. The impact our programs wish to see include:<ul><li>Early detection of health issues resulting in early intervention, primary care and treatment for individuals </li><li>Reduction and elimination of avoidable and curable diseases  </li><li>Improved quality of life due to greater access to quality healthcare, medication and government resources</li><li>Improvement in the nutrition and immunity of people thereby protecting them from risks and diseases</li><li>Enhanced institutional capabilities </li><li>Improved Health and hygiene amongst children and teenagers</li><li>Awareness of the need and value of good health - promoting new, healthier practices among communities</li><li>Implementation of preventive measures by individuals and families</li><li>Improved physical and mental health of children and young adults </li><li>Freedom from individuals experiencing stigma, fear and hopelessness around their bodies and health</li><li>Increased quality of life, overall wellness and joy in the lives of individuals </li></ul>

Project HealthCare

Jeevan Asha is based in Thane, Maharashtra serving underprivileged communities both near and far through the provision of education, nutrition and basic healthcare. Born from a desire to see long-term solutions in poor communities, the Jeevan Asha Charitable Society was founded in April 1999 by Basil D’Souza with a vision to ‘Bring hope to many lives by serving the community through various projects. Twenty-two years later, Jeevan Asha continues to bring impact, hope and transformation to the lives of endless individuals. Our primary programs focus on Education and Health and we are currently involved with 15 underprivileged communities in Thane.
