“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. Jeeyar Educational Trust was registered in 1982 as a Trust by HH. Chinna Jeeyar Swami with the noble idea of providing free education to students of all communities irrespective of religion, caste. Colour and gender. Netra Vidyalaya Junior college for Blind is a service unit of Jeeyar Educational Trust, was started in 2007 for providing higher education to blind students of class 11 &amp; 12th standards. Untill that time there was no exclusive college for blind in the country.Usually blind students take the help of scribes for writing final academic examinations. Blind students dependency on scribes does not bring out the originality of the students. The concept of using laptops is a brain child of our founder HH. Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji. Each student is provided with a laptop. They use a special software JAWS ( Screen reading software) and with that they can make out what they are typing. Board of examinations appointed a committee and after analyzing the results, gave permission for our students to write the exams using laptops with normal students.About 500 students have passed out with flying colors. Having acquainted with the use of computers, now these visually impaired students have ample opportunity. Many of them are well placed in banks, software industry and Govt. jobs. All the students are provided with free food, education, accommodation, clothing and basic medical treatment etc.Our parent organization Jeeyar Educational Trust and Netra Vidyalaya Junior college accounts are audited regularly.

Though capable, visually challenged children are left at the mercy of scribe for writing their exams. This dependency doesn’t bring out the originality of the students when compared to the normal students. There is a high probability of the scribe to be excellent or under perform. 
 Each student is provided with a laptop. Jaws software (screen reading) is loaded. This gives audio output whatever is typed out and shown on the monitor. This enables the students to know what they are typing. After few months of practice, they become experts and gain speed and write the final examinations on laptops along with normal students. once the exam paper is given, same is scanned and fed to the laptop. Students scroll the questions and start typing of their choice. After the required the time, printout is taken and attached to the main paper. 30 min extra time is given for scanning and printing. Food, education, accommodation, clothing and basic medical treatment is provided free of cost of reach student 
 About 500 students have passed out with flying colors since 2007. Most of the students go for under graduation with the laptop method which is available in the college (Netra Vidyalaya degree college). Every year excellent results are achieved with 95-100% pass rate. These students are preferred because of their operating skills of computer. many of them are absorbed in banks, private sector and govt offices. Few of them got placement as PO's in the bank.
