Majhihira National Basic Educational Institution (MNBEI) was established in 1940 by a group of young, energetic &amp; dedicated Gandhian social workers committed to the freedom fight movement of India. This team, headed by Shri Chitta Bhusan Dasgupta, the youngest son of Rishi Nibaran Chandra, - a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, under the tutelage of Dr. E.W. Aryanayakam, initiated the experimentation of Buniyadi Education (Nai Talim) at this remotest and inaccessible place where practically no amenities were available those days. It was believed that if Nai Talim could be successful in such a place, it should be successful in any part of the country. Being inspired by this principle in mind and believing in the Gandhian path of non-violence, Shri Chitta Bhusan and his team started their endeavor to start a Pathshala (educational hub) in a barren land donated by the villagers of Majhihira with only five half-naked and hungry stricken children from the local area.Mahatma Gandhi, throughout his life, bestowed equal importance on the development of body, mind, and soul of human beings which in turn culminated in his idea of Basic Education as the only conduit for rural and finally national emancipation. Introduction of Safai (cleaning), Charkha (hand-spinning), and Shramdaan (giving voluntary and meaningful labor) in the curricula at the ashram school of MNBEI from the very beginning thus stemmed from this Gandhian principle of Gram Swaraj. The then prevalent Macaulay system of education was designed and directed towards making a group of clerks in India which was contrary to the heritage of education of this sub-continent. Gandhiji’s Nai Talim education was inherited from the ancient Gurukul system with certain changes befitting to the social order and was targeted to replace the hitherto prevailing clerk-making system. Adoption of such a reverse path – against the accepted educational bureaucrats – was therefore an upheaval task for all Nai Talim schools in the country and Majhihira School was no exception to it. Thus, MNBEI had to face a varied nature of impedances throughout its pain-staking journey of 75 years. Even today, tradition remains.The Gandhian vision of Sarvoday through Nai Talim and the devotion – and dedication of Shri Chitta Bhusan have been transpired to all of us in MNBEI. Every person connected with the institution – in their capacity of either stakeholder or beneficiary – has imbibed this goal of development. In the present context of a self-centered, greed-based social fabric, it is extremely difficult to retain this faith of Sarvoday (all-out development of all). MNBEI has been successful in developing a team with the ideal of Shri Dasgupta and the paucity of funds coupled with socio-political barriers could not pose an insurmountable obstacle towards achieving the goal of MNBEI in this remote, poverty-stricken backward area in West Bengal state of India.MNBEI, since 1940, has been engaged in the fields of Education, Health and hygiene, Agriculture, and rural-based industries in and around Majhihira village. The endeavor of 75 years of MNBEI has resulted in the formation of the present main campus at Majhihira, commonly known as Ashram (a place of piety), spread over an area of 10 acres has become now the center of manifold activities – Basic education School up to 10th standard covering about 400 residential students, Primary Teachers’ Training College with an intake capacity of 100 trainees, Inclusive Education Program for Blind &amp; Low Vision children, Social Inclusion with Skill Development of differently abled population of the district, various units of local crafts, Gardening &amp; Horticulture in Organic way, Experimentation on dry land farming, Fishery, Animal husbandry and Vermi-compost making units and most importantly Charkha spinning &amp; Khadi weaving centre. In a word, the establishment of such a residential campus of multi-faceted activities has been able successfully to cater to the need for education, livelihood, and mental development of the rural populace of this region. ‘Learning with doing’ is the mainstay of our entire process in this ashram. To address our goal of serving the larger population we have also been implementing different awareness building and rural reconstruction programs for the excluded people in many villages near and far. This includes income generation leading to a better livelihood and self-sustenance through various agriculture and craft-based activities.During the course of interactions with the villagers we have painfully realized that in the absence of regular support and a developed training intervention for local youths, the goal of total development has appeared as a destiny obscure resulting in to a continuous migration of the ill-fated rural youths to the distant urban areas for an insignificant earning and deterring their relation with the family members, the rural society and the social culture of their own. All these happenings coupled together have compelled us,- with all our insufficient infrastructure, fund constraint, and lack of efficient expertise, - to design the program of establishing a tertiary-level learning center with necessary backup facilities in the form of a Rural Institute which will serve the interest of the rural mass of the country in general and the young population of the area in particular.The present glorious stature of MNBEI is the culmination of an ardent endeavor of the last seven decades under the leadership of Shri Chitta Bhusan Dasgupta, the founder of the institution, a youthful and energetic personality even after crossing his 100th birthday. The flame lighted up by him seventy-five years ago at Majhihira remains burning still today. We believe that the vision of Chitta Bhusan to establish a fully bloomed Rural Institute and accredited Rural University to attain the Gandhian goal of Sarvoday through Nai Talim is attainable only when all the national and international stakeholders will join hands in this effort and will not be guided by any vested interest rather a need-based and vision-oriented approach.
