Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. To meet the financial costs of running the home, SHEOWS needs support to continue providing the residents with all the facilities that they need. This includes constant care and round-the-clock medical attention, nutritious food and maintaining a hygienic environment to keep the seniors in comfort and good health. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. We envision a world where persons with disabilities receive unconditional love, respect and care irrespective of their age and severity — providing the training to improve the quality of life and empower them to live fully and independently. There should not be any discrimination in selecting the disabled as these special children are having multiple diagnoses, including autism, cerebral palsy, cerebral atrophy, down syndrome, visual impairments, and other developmental disabilities. This can be made possible by a residential school with all possible facilities, groups, trainers, hostels, security, transportation, medical facility, and so on irrespective of caste, religion, sex or age. Selection of these children is from below the poverty line. Poverty and hopelessness are a constant presence in the lives of these children. The overall aim is to help them live a normal life. At present, we have 32 such children in our project." We dream for them as they can't." 
 We provide individual attention and free training to the mentally challenged through speech therapy, audiology, physiotherapy, Yoga, Pranayama, and meditations depending on their need, in addition to special guidelines to the parents/guardians. We also adopt the holistic healing technique for treatment, such as acupressure, Pranic healing, Mandala treatment, Dharba healing, Chakra healing, Magnetic therapy, Mudra healing, Siddha healing, Panchabhutha treatment, Reiki, Pendulum dousing, Vibration treatment, Hydro-Therapy, Color therapy, Quantum therapy, Massage therapy, and naturopathy. The organisation is taking care of 32 such children providing transportation, food, uniform, therapy, medical care and daycare etc. 
 As we group the intellectually disabled children depending on their age, problem and sex, it is easy for the healers/teachers to understand each child in depth. By regular therapy, healing, and counselling, children will gain confidence, love each other, mix with others. We will make them understand their strengths in spite of their weaknesses. Encouraging their small success will build confidence in them to face the fact. We are doing this and seeing the considerable improvements in children. The development is wholeheartedly appreciated by parents, and they are happily implementing the periodical tips given to them.
